BEN MCINTOSH, THE MIND BEHIND THE NEW CONTENDER FIVE CANYONS SWEATSHIRT AND CLASSIC TEE

Written by Madeleine Whitley, on March 03, 2021

The people at Contender Bicycles know bicycles. Bikes are the common thread that tie us together. We try to have some of the best salespeople and mechanics in the business but we’re more than just bike nerds.

The Contender Bicycles crew is made of all kinds of people from all kinds of places with all kinds of backgrounds, talents, skills, and personalities.

Meet Ben McIntosh – one of our mechanics whose craftmanship extends far beyond a torque wrench.

Originally from Des Moines, Iowa, Ben McIntosh heard the call of the mountains and, like John Muir, he had to go. After graduating from Iowa State University with a degree in Fine Arts and Graphic Design, Ben worked at agencies in Iowa designing advertisements and whatnot before he surrendered to the call of the Wasatch Mountains and moved to Salt Lake City in early 2020. Having worked during summers as a bike mechanic during college, Ben landed at Contender Bicycles shortly after arriving in Utah and has been a valuable member of the service department ever since.

While Ben’s wrench skills are tremendous, he’s still kept a keen interest in graphic design and lent his skills to Contender for the design of a pair of new shop items. The Contender Bicycle Shop T-Shirt and a hand-drawn Contender Five Canyons Sweatshirt are must-haves for Salt Lake City cycling purists.

Featuring detailed topographic outlines of the canyons along the Salt Lake Valley’s east side, the Contender Five Canyons Sweatshirt is a soft-fit sweater you’ll be proud to show off.

When Ben isn’t at the shop or creating his next graphic masterpiece, you’ll probably find him hiking, biking, fishing, or camping in the hills above his new hometown.
