Trail bike mountain bikes are asked to excel under just about every condition. They try their best to work just as well ascending as they do descending, but many unfortunately fall short and compromise in some way. In the end, some trail bikes aim to be as versatile as possible, some aim to be fast, some aim to be fun at the sake of everything else; the 2017 Scott Genius 710 trail bike brings all of these positive attributes together into one cohesive package. For those looking for the fabled trail bike trifecta, you’ve found your match.
Getting on the Scott Genius 710, the first noticeable difference between this bike and other bikes is what is just to the right of the left handlebar grip, a remote suspension lever called TwinLoc. Scott’s TwinLoc technology is nothing new, but it has been refined just for the Scott Genius. The silver and black lever allows riders to adjust between three unique spring compression and damping curves (150mm open travel, 100mm traction, lockout). This allows riders to immediately adjust their Genius according to rider preference and terrain. Meanwhile, a generous 150mm travel from the fork and rear shock mean the bike is extremely forgiving over just about all kinds of terrain, and an adjustment chip in the rear swingarm allows riders to raise or lower their bottom bracket according to rider preference. Versatility is the Genius 710’s trump card, and it has it in spades.
Immediately from the first pedal strokes up the trail, it is obvious how efficient of a pedaler the 2017 Scott Genius 710 is. Thanks to good overall suspension design as well as the included TwinLoc remote, the 27.5” wheels quickly pick up speed, and it blasts up the trails with an efficiency most other trail bikes lack. Reach the crest of the ascent, switch the suspension to fully-open mode, and let the suspension take care of the rest. With 150mm suspension on tap, it handles drops with aplomb, and the smaller 27.5” wheel size means the bike loves to change directions, even on the tightest of hairpins.
When some trail bikes are out of their element, they tend to become very skittish. As a result, a rider can lose confidence in the bike’s ability and capabilities, making a ride less fun than it could’ve been otherwise. The Scott Genius 710 gleefully does otherwise; it’s limits, while lofty, are approachable for even beginning riders. The 27.5” wheel platform feel flickable yet stable, stiff without being unforgiving. An HMF carbon frame and alloy swingarm imbue the bike with a sense of lightness, nimbleness, and a wispy 28.2 lbs. These attributes ensure the Genius is fun without sacrificing actual capability.
Scott smartly specs their Genius 710 with a Fox 34 Float Performance Elite fork is paired to a Fox NUDE rear shock, and a Fox Transfer 150 dropper seatpost gets the saddle out of the way for the steepest of trails. The Syncros TR 2.0 wheelset is 27.5” and tubeless ready, and the Shimano Deore 2×11 XT drivetrain can easily be switched to a 1x drivetrain upon the buyer’s request.
