Scott mountain bikes have a strong following, due to their unparalleled record of carrying champions to victory time and time again. The newest iteration of the Scott Spark was piloted to two Rio Olympic Gold Medals as well as UCI World Championships in 2016 alone. With that kind of following it is no wonder that the Spark cross-country mountain bike is as popular around these parts as it is. The 2017 Scott Spark 920 SRAM GX Eagle strikes the perfect chord between performance and value; offered at demo bike prices, the Spark 920 becomes an unbeatable value.
For the Scott Spark 920, life starts at the revised trunnion-mount rear shock. Not only does the revised shock placement cut weight and stiffens up the bottom bracket, but the suspension itself is much better. The bike is much more sensitive to small bumps, but has enough progression at the end to prevent it from bottoming out should the going get too rough. This bike also features the same pivotless alloy swingarm as other Spark bikes that cuts weight, improves reliability, and increases stiffness out of the saddle. Scott’s TwinLoc design also makes its presence known here; this remote suspension lever switches the suspension through three different settings (open, traction, lockout), each with distinct spring compression and damping settings. This allows the bike and its rider to adapt to any type of terrain or situation that may lie ahead.
The most impressive part of the Scott Spark 920 isn’t all the technology crammed into the bike, it’s how cohesively the updates work together. The Scott Spark has never been called slow, but it also has never conquered trails in the same way as the new bike does. They’ve slackened the head tube angle to just 67 degrees, shortened the chainstays to just 428mm, and increased reach across the range, all in the name of making the bike more trail-friendly. This optimized geometry allows the Spark to feel as energetic through a technical cross-country course as it feels confidence-inspiring during a weekday trail session.
The 2017 Scott Spark 920 SRAM GX Eagle pairs an HMX carbon fiber frame and alloy swingarm to a SRAM GX Eagle 1×12 Drivetrain. Further, a Fox 34 Float Performance fork with 120mm travel pairs to a Fox NUDE EVOL rear shock, and a Fox Transfer dropper seatpost raises and lowers the saddle reliably. Syncros provides their Syncros XR 2.5 29” Boost wheelset, with DT Swiss internals for strong reliability and low weight. This is a bike spec’d for cross country performance, but with a touch of trail bike preparedness. It is available in four sizes (S-XL), in a matte black with white and red accents.
