With more and more pedal-assist mountain bikes on the market, it is harder than ever to decide which mountain bike is for you. Each come with varying amounts of weight, assist, and polish, and are each geared toward a slightly different type of riding. The 2018 Cannondale Cujo NEO 2 builds on the smart design of the standard Cujo, and adds a pedal-assist electric motor to help anyone enjoy more: more distance, more climbing, and more fun.
We love the Cannondale Moterra, Cannondale’s full suspension pedal-assist electric mountain bike. The bike showed a high level of polish, wasn’t too heavy, and made us believers of bikes of this type. The Cannondale Cujo NEO 2 builds on the excellent Cujo hardtail mountain bike platform. With its 27.5″+ tires and confidence-inspiring geometry, the NEO adds a Shimano STEPS E8000 drive unit and battery. Controlling assist comes thanks to a neatly-integrated computer and remote lever, which are both unobtrusive and intuitive. Further, the drive unit and battery weigh in at just 13 pounds, lighter than the competition by at least a pound each.
The lack of weight is apparent on the trail; the drive unit puts out a substantial 250W of power and 70 N-m of torque, plenty to get up and over any crest or climb. The Cannondale Cujo NEO 2 retains (as much as possible) the geometry of the standard bike. This means it has a slack headtube angle and long reach to improve stability on high-speed descents; and a steep seattube angle places the rider in a better climbing position. Combined with the wide 27.5 x 2.8″ tires, the Cujo NEO promises to be a confident performer, regardless of whether the trail points up or down.
The Cannondale Cujo NEO 2 is available in five sizes (XS-XL), in an Acid Red colorway. It features an aluminum frame, a Shimano STEPS E8000 drivetrain with a 500Wh battery, a 120mm SR Suntour XCR LO fork, and a Shimano Deore M6000 10-Speed drivetrain. Shimano provides the hydraulic disc brakes, WTB offers their WTB Trailblazer 27.5 x 2.8″ tires, and Cannondale offers their Beast plus rims laced to Formula hubs.
