The release of the original Cannondale Synapse was a bit of a mold-breaking bicycle not just for Cannondale, but also the whole cycling industry. The Synpase helped popularize the endurance road bike segment for cyclists hungry for more comfort on their long, gruelling rides. The new 2018 Cannondale Synapse Carbon Disc RED eTap takes the successful Synapse formula and amps it up, making for a bike that is faster, lighter, and more comfortable than ever before.
The key to success for the new Cannondale Synapse is a refinement upon the Synapse Active Vibration Elimination (SAVE) philosophy, a micro-suspension system deeply imbued into the engineering of the bicycle. SAVE uses engineered flex zones throughout the frame and fork to provide ample compliance to soak up vibrations from choppy roads. Cannondale continue to use their 25.4mm SAVE seatpost, which now provides 36% better vibration deflection than previously. With size-specific tube profiles, head tubes, and steer tube diameters, and new clearance for a 32mm wide tire, the new Synapse promises to be more comfortable than ever, isolated from fatigue associated with road vibration.
The value of the new Synapse isn’t in how well it isolates riders from discomfort, it’s how well it connects riders to what’s happening DESPITE its concessions to comfort. Updated geometry with asymmetric chainstays and fork blades increase stiffness where it matters most. A 10% stiffer headtube provides better tracking ability, and a low bottom bracket provides excellent high-speed stability. 28mm wide tires add confidence and comfort, and overall the bike absolutely feels faster than it has any right to feel. There is a sense that the bike is always ready to go faster, and the confidence it inspires seems to back that up. Standard disc brakes stop with an authority that rim brakes simply cannot match.
This model features a SRAM RED HRD eTap wireless electronic group with a Quarq Prime powermeter crankset using compact (50/34) chainrings and an 11-30 cassette. It uses a Fulcrum Racing 500 DB wheelset, Vittoria Rubino Pro 700 x 28c tires, and a Cannondale SAVE carbon seatpost. It is available in six sizes (48-61 cm), in their BBQ (a matte black with dark grey accents) colorway.
