The advent of the endurance road bike has brought comfort to the masses. Space for a wider tire pairs with taller handlebars and shorter reach to place riders in a position better-suited to all-day riding. The only caveat with endurance road bikes like this is the perceived lack of performance. The Cannondale Synapse, a bike that broke the mold by helping to pioneer the endurance road bike, breaks the mold once again with the new 2018 Cannondale Synapse Hi-Mod Disc Dura-Ace, a bike that pairs race bike-levels of stiffness with all-day riding comfort.
For the new Synapse, Cannondale started at the bottom bracket and then built from there. The bottom bracket is beefy and connects a seat tube that forks at the bottom for ultimate stiffness and weight. The chainstays are asymmetrical, with the drive side chainstay being 18% larger than the non drive side. The downtube flares out at the bottom bracket, but tapers to the the headtube, which now houses size-specific steer tube diameters. These changes make for a bike that is 10% stiffer around the bottom bracket, much closer to the Cannondale Supersix Evo in terms of performance. At the same time, a Hi-Mod frame weighs just 950 g for a frame, making it one of the lightest frames in its class. New clearance for a 32 mm wide tire are a pleasing addition to an otherwise performance-minded overhaul.
These changes make for an endurance road bike that is just as comfortable translating every last ounce of power into forward momentum as it is over choppy roads. The new Synapse Hi-Mod still uses Cannondale’s Synapse Active Vibration philosophy, making the bike flex just enough in the right places without sacrificing stiffness, but it rockets forward like a Tour-worthy race road bike. It never feels sluggish, slow, or ponderous, even with wider tires. Instead, the Synapse Hi-Mod can only be described as confidence inspiring in high-speed corner carving, most of it due to a 10% stiffer head tube. Never before has the Synapse pedaled with this kind of verve and eagerness, but we are delighted that it does.
This model features a Shimano Dura Ace mechanical hydraulic drivetrain with a Cannondale HollowGram Si crankset using compact (50/34) SpideRing chainrings and an 11-30 cassette. It uses a HollowGram carbon fiber wheelset, Vittoria Corsa 700 x 28c tires, and a Cannondale SAVE carbon seatpost. It is available in six sizes (48-61 cm), in their Acid Red (a gloss red with maroon accents) colorway.
