The biggest thing people like about mountain bikes is how it can be a ticket to adventure anywhere, at just about any time. The truth of the matter is that while there are many bikes that work in all kinds of terrain, few are as fun as the 2018 Scott Contessa Spark 710. With grippy 27.5” x 2.8 tires and smart design, this bike is just fun chugging up a climb as it is weaving down the other side of the mountain.
Scott Start with an updated trunnion-mount shock, which allows for optimized frame design. One advantage is a much lower standover height to make the bike easier to mount for shorter riders. The bike soaks up small bumps much better than before, but is even more supportive than before under mid-travel, making the bike feel faster than before. The pivotless rear swingarm again cuts weight, improves stiffness out of the saddle, and is more reliable due to its one-piece design. Scott also saw fit to include their TwinLoc suspension remote lever, which switches the suspension between three unique settings (full travel, traction mode, lockout) based on terrain. With the flip of an easy-to-use switch, the Contessa Spark goes from a thoroughbred climber to a trail-ready machine.
To differentiate the Spark 710 from other models, this model features a focus on fun, regardless of terrain. This calls for a slackened headtube and longer reach than other Spark models across the range. Further, the seat tube is steeper than before, which combines with shorter chainstays, the wide 2.8” tires, and the TwinLoc “Traction” suspension setting to make a bike that confidently goes up trails where lesser bikes might falter. Flip the suspension to open, and that newfound confidence is rewarded with predictable, precise handling that shows how capable the bike truly is. Scott quote a 5 watt increase of rolling resistance in exchange for a massive 21% increase in cornering grip, but all you’ll feel is every ounce of effort channeled into forward momentum, and the bike’s imbued sense of stability leading to even more fun on the trail.
The 2018 Scott Contessa Spark 710 is differentiated by its women’s-specific approach, with women’s specific (read: lighter-weight) shock tuning, and unique handlebars, stem, grips and saddle. This model features a SRAM GX Eagle 1×12 drivetrain, a Syncros X-30S wheelset, and Syncros finishing parts. Fox offers their 130mm Fox 34 Performance Float Elite fork, Fox NUDE EVOL 120mm rear shock, and Fox Transfer dropper seatpost. The Contessa Spark 710 is available in three sizes (S-L), in a matte magenta with orange accent.
