Scott have had a long-standing dedication to building their Contessa line of bikes, a women’s-specific line that focuses on providing quality options for the underserved women’s market. Scott continue this tradition with the 2018 Scott Contessa Spark 910, a well-balanced cross country bike that allows the rider to have just as much fun descending as they would climbing.
The 2018 Scott Contessa Spark 910 starts life with three simple goals: keep the bike light, make the bike extremely confidence-inspiring, and ensure the unique needs of women are met on the trails. To start, they use their HMF-grade carbon fiber and alloy swingarm, ensuring low weight and high stiffness for optimal climbing. They then combine this with an updated trunnion-mount shock, which allows for optimized frame design. One advantage is a much lower standover height to make the bike easier to mount for shorter riders. The bike soaks up small bumps much better than before, but is even more supportive than before under mid-travel, making the bike feel faster than before. The pivotless rear swingarm again cuts weight, improves stiffness out of the saddle, and is more reliable due to its one-piece design. Scott also saw fit to include their TwinLoc suspension remote lever, which switches the suspension between three unique settings (full travel, traction mode, lockout) based on terrain. With the flip of an easy-to-use switch, the Contessa Spark goes from a thoroughbred climber to a trail-ready machine.
Scott bikes are well-known for their excellent handling ability, regardless of model or distinction, and the Scott Contessa Spark is no slouch. Thanks to shorter chainstays and a steeper seat tube angle than before, the Spark delivers on its cross-country heritage and a better climber than ever before. However, a slacker 67.2 degree head tube angle, a longer top tube across the range, and an overall longer wheelbase contribute to a bike that feels surprisingly comfortable on technical, flow trails, but is still agile enough for tight switchbacks. As such, the steering is impressively calm when needed, leaving the rider ever more confident to carry speed over varying types of terrain, regardless of grade. The Spark’s low 27.3 pound weight keeps climbing easy on the legs, and its 29” wheels maintain momentum
The 2018 Scott Contessa Spark 910 features women’s-specific rear shock tuning (for lighter individuals), specific handlebars, grips, and saddle. It comes spec’d with a SRAM GX Eagle 12-speed drivetrain, Shimano SLX brakes, a Fox 34 Float Performance 120mm fork, and a 120mm Fox NUDE EVOL rear shock. Fox also contributes their reliable and smooth Fox Transfer dropper seatpost, and Syncros provides their Syncros XR2.5 CL 29” Boost wheelset, as well as finishing kit. The Contessa Spark 910 is available in three sizes (S-L), in a matte grey with black and magenta accents.
