Choosing the right mountain bike is never easy, especially with as many options as there are on the market today. Much of this comes down to constantly-improving technologies, but this can also be attributed to consumers wanting bikes properly designed for the kind of riding that they do. Scott, for better or worse, have responded greatly to this calling by offering options of the Scott Spark cross country mountain bike for everyone. The 2018 Scott Contessa Spark 930 is one such example, a mountain bike that combines cross country efficiency, trail bike handling ability, and women’s-specific design to make for an ideal mountain bike choice.
The Scott Contessa name denotes that a bicycle in specific is designed with women’s needs in mind. The shock has been repositioned for a lower standover height, ideal for riders with shorter legs or those simply wanting more clearance. This new trunnion-mount setup further allows for a progressive rear shock design, one that soaks up more small bumps while resisting bottoming out. Scott’s TwinLoc remote suspension lever controls both front and rear shock simultaneously, through three distinct suspension settings (full travel, traction mode, lockout). More than anything, this remote lets riders easily open or close travel to make the bike as efficient riding as possible, regardless of terrain. Scott have paired this to a new pivotless rear swingarm that is lighter, stiffer, and much more reliable in function than before. These small design flourishes are shared with the Spark’s carbon siblings and it defines the Spark one of the lightest but most-forgiving bikes in its class.
Besides updated suspension and frame design, the 2018 Scott Contessa Spark 930 also features updated geometry. The bike climbs up hills better than before, and with excellent efficiency thanks to 29” wheels. The interesting part is how confidently it descends. No cross country mountain bike handles with this kind of high-speed stability, while no trail bike climbs as tenaciously as this. This level of versatility is ideal for a bike such as this, and it defines the Scott Contessa model line.
The 2018 Scott Contessa Spark 930 features women’s-specific shock tuning, as well as grips, handlebars, stem, and saddle. It is available with an alloy frame and swingarm, with a Shimano Deore/SLX drivetrain. Scott have paired a 120 mm Rock Shox Judy Silver RL fork to an 120 mm X-Fusion NUDE rear suspension, while a Syncros 2.0 dropper seatpost adds bicycle control over rough terrain. The bike also features a Syncros X25 tubeless wheelset and other Syncros accoutrements. This bike is available in three sizes (S-L), in a gloss black with beautiful turquoise and pistachio green accents.
