In late 2006, Scott released the Spark, a hard-charging full-suspension cross country mountain bike that was faster than just about anything else on the market. In the years since and iterations to come, the Scott Spark has become a three-headed beast of a bicycle, with three versions tailor-made for different riding styles. The most famous version of the Spark is the championship-winning Spark RC 900, seen under the legs of Nino Schurter and Jenny Rissveds. For 2018, Scott have brought forth the 2018 Scott Contessa Spark RC 900, a fast, efficient 100mm full-suspension mountain bike made specifically for women.
The Scott Contessa Spark RC starts life with Scott’s HMX-level carbon frame and swingarm, and combines it with their newest trunnion-mount suspension placement. Small-bump compliance is better than ever as a result, but the most impressive piece is its efficiency; the pivotless rear swingarm has huge chainstays for improved stiffness, but lower overall weight. Scott pair this to their TwinLoc suspension remote lever, allowing riders to adapt the bike to terrain using three unique suspension settings (full travel, traction mode for climbing, lockout). TwinLoc is actuated by cleverly hidden cabling to give the bike a stealthy no-cable look, which along with extremely low weight (22.05 lb complete) and a stiffer pedaling platform, make for a faster, more efficient Scott Spark Contessa RC 900.
One ride on the 2018 Scott Contessa Spark RC 900, and it is obvious how well the bike is designed. Thanks to the updated design, Scott have shortened the chainstays to make it snappier out of the saddle; to make it a better handler, they’ve made the headtube more slack, and increased reach across the range. For as fast as the Contessa Spark RC 900 scampers up the trail, it descends with a calmness unlike any other cross country bike. These specific traits are thanks to a longer reach across the size range and a slacker headtube angle, both of which contribute to a more confident and precise descender. Make no mistake, the bike is happiest as a marathon bike in the very best cross country competition, but it works better in technical terrain than it has any right to.
The 2018 Scott Contessa Spark RC 900 is differentiated by its women’s-specific approach, with women’s specific (read: lighter-weight) shock tuning, and unique handlebars, stem, grips and saddle. This model features a SRAM X01 Eagle 1×12 drivetrain, a Syncros XR1.5 TR wheelset, and Syncros carbon finishing kit. Rock Shox offer their Olympic Gold-winning 100 mm Rock Shox SID RLC fork, while Fox share their Fox NUDE 100mm rear shock. The 2018 Scott Contessa Spark RC 900 is available in three sizes (S-L), in a gloss black with turquoise and yellow accents.
