Exceptional bikes come through Contender Bicycles every day. People come to us as an authority on what is truly the best of the best in the cycling industry, and not just for what’s hot at the moment. For us, it’s not often that we get truly excited about new bikes, but the new 2018 Scott Genius 700 Ultimate does just that. The Genius Ultimate isn’t just one of the best trail bikes in the industry, nor is it just what’s hot at the moment; it’s a culmination of technology and heightened limits that is absolutely scintillating.
The 2018 Scott Genius 700 Ultimate not only features the best of what Scott have to offer, but it features some of the most advanced design on the market. Scott started by adapting what they learned from their World Cup-winning Scott Spark redesign; namely, a redesigned rear swingarm and shock mount. The Genius Ultimate now pairs their top-grade HMX carbon frame and a four-pivot carbon swingarm to a trunnion-mount rear shock. This is an upgrade in every sense of the word, as the bike is now stiffer, lighter, and much more responsive under acceleration. The redesigned kinematics provide much better small bump compliance while doing a fantastic job at preventing the shock from ever bottoming out. The new design lends the bike a playfulness out of the box, as a frame, shock, swingarm, and hardware weigh in at just 2249 grams.
Scott mountain bikes are well-known for technologies that enhance rider enjoyment and usability, and for the Scott Genius 700 Ultimate, they’ve used every trick at their disposal. They have updated their well-known TwinLoc suspension at the suspension itself; the remote suspension lever switches between three unique spring and compression damping curves. These three curves are defined by travel (150mm, 100mm, and lockout), and allow the bike to transform from a downhill beast, to an adept climber, to a bike perfect for everything in between.
The Genius Ultimate includes a flip chip in the rear suspension linkage to to raise or lower the bottom bracket (between 27.5” and 29” wheels) according to wheel size. They’ve developed a downtube frame protector to protect the frame from rock strikes and to ensure easy access to cable routing and nicely hide away Shimano Di2 battery. Syncros have developed a proprietary handlebar/stem/headset cap, called the Syncros Hixon iC integrated bar. While the Hixon iC keeps the bike stiff under heavy acceleration, it cleans up the cockpit, and is lighter than many handlebars, at just 290g. Finally, a Syncros Trail Fender neatly bolts into the drillings in the fork. Not only is the bike extraordinarily versatile according to terrain, but these new features ensure that you will have the right bike, exactly when you need it.
Scott have always designed the Genius to climb as well as it descends, and they’ve taken the Genius 700 Ultimate to new heights to enhance those characteristics. Compared to the outgoing bike, this one has shorter chainstays (438mm), a steeper seattube (75 degrees), longer reach across the range, and a super slack headtube (65 degrees) to complement the longer reach. These qualities instill tons of confidence in the rider; the Genius Ultimate climbs like a cross-country bike, it descends with supreme confidence and smooth turn-in, and provides smooth, neutral braking.
The 2018 Scott Genius 700 Ultimate is the best trail bike Scott has to offer, and they’ve spec’d it like the superbike that it is. It comes spec’d with SRAM XX1 Eagle drivetrain and SRAM Guide Ultimate brakes. A Fox 36 Float Factory Air front with Kashima coat, Fox Nude EVOL with Kashima coat, and a Fox Transfer Kashima seatpost are the best Fox offer in adjustability. A DT Swiss XMC 1200 Carbon Spline CL wheelset keep the bike gliding forward. They offer the bike in four sizes, ranging from small to extra-large.
