For the 2018 Scott Spark 720, Scott started with their trunnion-mount rear suspension and updated swingarm design. The trunnion-mount rear shock improves small-bump sensitivity in the shock, but it also does an excellent job of making the bike feel like it has much more travel than it actually has. The revised shock mount also allowed Scott to beef up the bottom bracket area while lowering weight. It also allowed Scott to use a pivotless rear swingarm, which is lighter, more reliable, and makes for an even stiffer pedaling platform. The alloy frame keeps weight nice and low, making the bike tossable in tight switchbacks. Their TwinLoc remote suspension lever makes an appearance here to change suspension travel and compression at the flip of a switch. It allows the Spark to descend with confidence or climb tenaciously, and every situation in between.
Compared to the rest of the comprehensive Spark model line, the 2018 Scott Spark 720 employs a modern trail bike geometry: a slack 66.9 degree head tube angle, short chainstays, and steeper seat tube make for a smooth performer across varying terrain. The Spark 720 is also differentiated by its wide 27.5” x 2.8” tires, which Scott tout provide a 21% increase in grip in all situations. This makes for a bike that handles high-speed sweepers like a cross country bike, but the wide tire makes the bike much more capable on descents than a 120mm travel bike has any right to function. Overall, the Spark 720 does an excellent job of delivering the best of both worlds, with little compromise along the way.
The Scott Spark comes spec’d just as a jack-of-all-trades bike ought to. A SRAM GX Eagle drivetrain provides wide gearing, while the Fox 34 Float Performance 130mm fork and Fox NUDE EVOL 120mm shock keep terrain under control. This is complemented by a Fox Transfer dropper seatpost, Shimano Deore M6000 brakes, and a Syncros X-30S Boost-specific wheelset. While the Scott Spark 720 is already a great value, Scott have managed to provide excellent specs while bringing price down, making this bike that much more of a value. If you’re looking for a true do-it-all bike, look no further.
