Over the past few years, Scott have put out mountain bikes that are more impressive by the day, with the Spark cross country bike their most notable example. Each bike is imbued with championship-winning DNA, and combines it with impressively low weight and strong performance across the whole model range. As one goes up the model range, those character traits are amplified little by little, making the bike evermore enjoyable. That said, it makes sense that the very best version of the Spark is the Scott Spark 900 Ultimate. With some of the very best kit on market today, the 2018 Scott Spark 900 Ultimate is the only choice when only the very best will suffice.
The 2018 Scott Spark 900 Ultimate starts life with their top-end HMX carbon fiber, and forms a trunnion-mount shock with it. Simply put, this rear suspension layout pairs with a carbon rocker link to make for a much-improved suspension setup; the shock is sensitive and compliant over small bumps, but the rocker link changes stroke deeper into the suspension travel. This creates much better mid-travel support, while resisting bottoming out. The carbon rear swingarm is pivotless, thus cutting weight, improving out-of-saddle stiffness, and making the whole system much more reliable. Scott then employ their TwinLoc suspension remote lever, which allows the bike to change between three unique suspension settings (full travel, traction mode, lockout) based on terrain. The new suspension design, along with TwinLoc and that low weight, make for a uniquely efficient machine that climbs with the precision of a Swiss watch.
While other Scott Spark models skew to one specific style of riding, the Spark 900-series straddles the line between both cross country and trail bikes. It’s updated geometry skews evermore toward trail bike status, thanks to a slack 67.2 degree head tube angle and longer reach. More progressive geometry such as this allows the Spark 900 Ultimate to descend with a surprising calmness that lesser bikes lack; it doesn’t feel twitchy behind the helm, but its obvious that the bike is still skewed toward high-speed stability. It corners well, thanks to its low 24 pound weight, and it feels superbike-quick when climbing, translating every bit of effort into forward momentum. The bike just wants to go fast, and it does a phenomenal job of inspiring rider confidence to do so.
The 2018 Scott Spark 900 Ultimate is the Spark in full glory, just as Scott imagined it. It features the very best that SRAM, Syncros, Fox and DT Swiss have to offer. A SRAM XX1 Eagle drivetrain highlights the Kashima-coated Fox 34 Float Factory 120mm fork, Fox NUDE EVOL 120mm rear shock, and Fox Transfer dropper seatpost. DT Swiss contribute their DT Swiss XRC 1200 Carbon Spline CL carbon wheelset, and Syncros provide their best stem, seatpost, and saddle. The bike is available in four sizes (S-XL), in a matte black with few gold accents.
