Due to how quickly technology changes, not many mountain bike designs are able to completely withstand the test of time. With the case of many mountain bikes, they’re looked back upon fondly, but when given the preference, riders will almost always go with the more higher tech version. However, if there were to be a mountain bike on the market today that is a modern classic, we think the current 2018 Scott Spark RC 900 SL is the choice of the bunch.
This modern classic finds much of its value from impressive weight and high capabilities. Scott use their lightest HMX SL carbon to bring frame, shock, and hardware to just 1799 grams, lighter than just about anything else on the market by several hundred grams. They achieve this staggeringly low weight thanks to a trunnion-mount rear shock. This new mount not only makes for a much more sensitive rear shock, but the carbon rocker link makes the bike feel like it has much more travel than 100mm, as it ramps up to resist bottoming out. It also means the rear swingarm is pivotless, which cuts weight and improves stiffness and reliability. Scott pair this new suspension setup to their TwinLoc suspension remote lever, which allows the bike to change between three unique suspension settings (full travel, traction mode, lockout) based on terrain. The new suspension design, along with TwinLoc and that low weight, make for a uniquely efficient machine that climbs with stunning speed.
While the Scott Spark RC 900 SL is designed to be a dedicated cross country rocket, the RC 900 SL is just as capable going through rocky cross country courses as it is down pavement-smooth singletrack. They’ve imbued such confidence through updated geometry; while the head tube stack across the range is super low for a 29er (thank you Nino Schurter!), the slack 68.5 degree head tube angle and greater overall reach keeps steering calm through technical bits. A bike like this looks like it would be unabashed in its mission to go as fast as possible, but it really is impressive how quickly the Spark RC 900 SL can be ridden up the trail and down again. Above else, the bike’s low weight makes the bike feel extremely tossable, and is neither too twitchy nor too lethargic.
A complete 2018 Scott Spark RC 900 SL is spec’d just as a modern classic should be. SRAM XX1 Gold Eagle is used throughout, while the SRAM Level Ultimate brakes ensure consistent stopping power. Fox provides their 32 Stepcast Float Factory fork, and their NUDE Kashima-coated rear shock makes for an efficient pedaling platform. Syncros provides their very best touchpoints, while the DT Swiss XRC 1200 Carbon Spline wheelset amplifies how quick the Spark feels. The Spark RC 900 SL comes in four sizes (S – XL) in a matte black colorway.
