At Contender Bicycles, we’ve seen more and more people stray away from the traditional 100mm cross country mountain bike. For as fast as they are, more often than not the average mountain bike rider prefers high-speed stability to ultra-quick turn in. They prefer something that is more versatile while still being able to have that typical XC bike speed when necessary. BMC paid attention to how people were riding, and as a result the 2019 BMC Agonist 01 ONE was born.
The Agonist starts with the World Cup worthy BMC Fourstroke, an all-out performance XC bike, estimated 2180g for a frame, shock, and hardware in a size Medium, as well as an updated version of their Advanced Pivot System (APS). APS optimizes rear triangle pivot locations to ensure an ideal combination of small bump compliance, braking performance, and pedaling efficiency. They then spec’d 110mm travel for front and rear shocks for greater big bump compliance over longer distances. BMC also slackened the headtube (1 degree across all sizes), and increased reach. This makes for noticeably better control and stability during high speeds, smoother turning during tight switchbacks, and an overall more fun riding experience. They’ve also stuck to their 29er-specific Big Wheel Concept (BWC) for nimble handling and quick rollover for every Agonist, regardless of size.
BMC has also worked to make everything better integrated within the bike. The Agonist’s downtube and drive-side chainstay receive covers to protect the frame from abrasion, and a mudflap over the rear pivot protects from mud while keeping cable housing out of sight. Further, the rear shock is elegantly placed to not show remote lever cables, while a well-placed chain catcher is placed ideally for a 1x or 2x drivetrain. 2019 Agonist also features internal routing for a dropper seatpost.
The BMC Agonist 01 ONE features BMC’s 01 Premium Carbon frame and rear triangle, and pairs it to a Fox Float 32 Performance Elite fork, (110mm) a Fox Float DPS EVOL rear shock, (110mm) and a SRAM XX1/GX Eagle drivetrain. Shimano Deore XT brakes keep the party under control, while Vittoria Barzo TR 29 x 2.25″ tires wrapped around a DT Swiss XR1501 Spline ONE 29er wheelset push you faster and further. A KS-LEV Integra dropper seatpost, Fizik Antares R5 saddle, and BMC carbon handlebar complete the package. Agonist 01 is available in four sizes (S-XL).
