More and more, cross country mountain bikes are seeing a bit of a transformation. Gone are the days when the best XC bikes had short-travel suspension and steep headtubes. Today slack headtubes and longer reach are in. This has been to the benefit of riders, as promises of greater high-speed stability and more confident turning are largely fulfilled. BMC saw fit to create a new cross-country model line independent of their current line of World Cup-worthy Fourstroke with the BMC Agonist 02 ONE.
The new BMC Agonist 02 ONE is perfect for those who love to climb as much as they love to descend. BMC uses a premium carbon fiber main frame like the Agonist 01, and uses an alloy rear swingarm for a gain of about 350g over the full carbon version. Like the Fourstroke, BMC uses their Big Wheel Concept (BWC) across the line, ensuring that 29er wheels feel nimble while maintaining quick rollover over obstacles. Suspension travel has been increased moderately over the Fourstroke (to 110mm) to keep you feeling in control while keeping the bike firm under acceleration. The headtube is made more slack (69.5 degrees across the board) and overall reach is lengthened. BMC’s Advanced Pivot System (APS) have been widened and updated to optimize small bump compliance while keeping the rear wheel planted on the ground. This allows for optimal braking and overall pedaling efficiency, for the best of both worlds.
BMC spared no expense in the Agonist’s finishing details. The downtube and drive-side chainstay receive composite protectors to help against abrasion. A mudflap protects the rear pivots and internally-routed cables from grime and general wear. Neatly placed cable routing allows for 1x or 2x drivetrain capability, as well as dropper post compatibility. BMC has also changed placement of their rear shock to discreetly run the lockout remote cable, with an integrated chain guide to prevent chain drop. This makes for a bike that is as durable as it is efficiently designed.
The BMC Agonist 02 ONE features BMC’s 02 Carbon frame and alloy rear triangle, and pairs it to a Fox Float 32 Performance fork, (110mm) a Fox Float DPS EVOL rear shock, (110mm) and a SRAM GX Eagle drivetrain. Shimano SLX brakes keep the party under control, while Vittoria Barzo TR 29 x 2.25″ tires wrapped around a DT Swiss X1700 Spline 29er wheelset push you faster and further. A X-Fusion Manic dropper seatpost, Fizik Antares R7 saddle, and BMC alloy cockpit complete the package. Agonist 01 is available in four sizes (S-XL).
