Engineered to deliver a tarmac-taming performance in an achingly modern design, the Alpenchallenge AMP is the ultimate e-bike for urban agility. World-class Swiss design, BMC’s unerring attention to detail and noteworthy innovations unite to give the 2019 BMC Alpenchallenge AMP City LTD a remarkable set of capabilities.
Despite looking relatively pedestrian, there is a ton of tech to the 2019 Alpenchallenge AMP. The full carbon frame and fork are formed to perfectly accentuate the battery found on the seattube. BMC found that locating the battery there improved handling over placing the battery in the downtube. The brand has also added their Micro Travel Technology (MTT), also found on their Teamelite mountain bike. MTT features 10mm of tuned travel to provide not only the requisite traction for the Shimano drive unit, but also improved comfort. A D-shaped carbon seatpost and integrated cockpit, also seen on their Roadmachine and Teammachine road bikes, which keeps cables and housing out of sight.
The Alpenchallenge AMP is designed around integration, much like the rest of BMC’s collection. BMC aimed to build a lightweight bike with neutral handling and impressive comfort. To do so, the Shimano STEPS E8000 drive unit and Shimano battery are neatly integrated around the bottom bracket and seattube area. The STEPS drive unit is something found on the majority of BMC AMP e-bikes. With a 500 Wh battery and a motor that provides 250 W of assistance, and 70 Nm of torque, the bike offers plenty of support, quiet assistance for up to 55 miles, and little drag compared to other drive motors. They pair this to their Di2-like display and assistance system; both are compact and easy to use as well. STEPS is one of the most compact systems around, and BMC takes advantage of that with their Drive Nest Unit; in other words, the drive motor is a bit further back than the competition.
This 2019 BMC Alpenchallenge AMP City LTD is based around a carbon frame and fork, Shimano STEPS E8000 drive unit, and DT SWISS AMP 1800 Spline db 25 wheels. A Shimano Metrea drivetrain, Shimano RS600 brakes, Brooks Cambium C17 saddle, Curana Fenders, and a Supernova Mini2 front light complete the package. Alpenchallege AMP is available in three sizes (S-L).
