The cross-country riding of old has morphed over the years into a more aggressive form of riding requiring slacker angles. Yet with cross-country riding you still need to make a quick and nimble climber to try and get you up as quickly as you go down. BMC addresses both of these needs with the all-new for 2019 BMC Fourstroke 01 XC mountain bike and additionally releases a simple yet progressive dropper post design.
Following the trend of XC machines trending towards slacker geometry, the BMC Fourstroke 01 follows suit. With a head angle (67.5 degrees), long front end (465 mm reach on a size large) and short chainstays, the new design features some aggressive trail geometry while specing a 100 mm front fork. Of course, weight is important as well. Made of BMC’s 01 Premium Carbon front and rear with carbon linkage and all the bells and whistles with the build, the Fourstroke 01 ONE weighs in at 22 lbs.
Now to the dropper post. It’s rad and that’s not just because BMC’s all new Race Application Dropper (RAD) is new and proprietary. The performance backs up the uniqueness of this new design. The design also increases the durability and in turn longevity of your typical dropper post. Low air pressure and no hydraulics simplifies this design but in turn refines your typically over-engineered standard dropper design. At 345 grams, this oval shaped post increases strength while shedding grams. It only has 80 mm of drop with a two-position adjustment but for a bike geared for optimal cross-country riding this seems to be the sweet spot. The design clamps the post at the bottom of the seat tube. This not only eliminates the negative effects on performance of clamping with a traditional seatpost clamp but also allows a light seat tube to be designed. Down the road other manufacturers will surely try and mimic this design.
The 2019 BMC Fourstroke 01 ONE features the creme de la creme of componentry and parts to complete the build. The SRAM XX1 Eagle groupset is complemented with a Fox Float 32 SC, Factory, FIT4, Kashima, Remote (100mm), 15x110mm thru-axle front fork with a Fox Float DPS, Factory, Evol, Kashima, Remote (100mm) rear. Other highlights to the build include the DT Swiss XRC 1200 wheelset which is more than World Cup proven.
