Oh, the mythical do-it-all bicycle. Riders and companies love the idea alike, but the idea itself can be hard to employ. Often, these bikes are compromised and they prove the idea that one can’t have their cake and eat it too. BMC have tried in the past with their trail-oriented Speedfox, and for this newest iteration, BMC believe they’ve hit the nail on the head to provide a bike that can handle just about anything anyone has to offer. It may look clean in appearance, but the 2019 BMC Speedfox 01 ONE has much more to it than meets the eye.
The Speedfox 01 ONE features just about everything BMC have to offer while keeping everything in a nicely-integrated, svelte package. BMC’s Advanced Pivot System (APS) four-point linkage gets a trail-specific tune that does a great job at creating an efficient pedaling platform that also does a great job of using all 130mm of the rear suspension’s travel. Frames have been optimized for lighter weight with a carbon swingarm, and as such a frame/shock/hardware weighs in at just 2330 g. A mud flap for the swingarm linkage neatly covers the rear derailleur & brake cabling, while simultaneously preventing wear and tear caused by elements to the rear linkage. They’ve also included rubber mouldings to protect the frame, drive-side chainstay, and the drive-side of the bottom bracket from abrasion, while a chain keeper elegantly keeps the chain in place for 1x or 2x drivetrains.
The biggest piece of technology that BMC has worked hard to conceal is what they call Trailsync. Very simply, Trailsync links the rear shock’s suspension travel to saddle height. Drop the saddle into one of three preselected heights (top, 20mm dropped, fully dropped) using a cable-actuated lever on the handlebars, and the rear shock goes from trail mode to fully open. Negotiate your climb with the saddle all the way up, and the trail suspension setting takes care of small bumps. Flick the remote lever, lower the saddle, and seamlessly the suspension is fully open to grip and rip during the descents. The Speedfox’s integrated dropper post and rear shock connection are internally cabled to create a look as seamless as how Trailsync functions.
Great engineering deserves great parts. The 2019 BMC Speedfox 01 ONE features BMC’s premium carbon frame and swingarm, and pairs it to a SRAM GX Eagle drivetrain, Shimano Deore XT brakes, a 120 mm Fox DPS Performance Elite rear shock, a 120 mm RockShox Pike RC fork, and DT Swiss XM 1501 30 Spline One wheels. It is available in four sizes (S – XL); sizes small and medium receive 27.5” wheels, while medium, thru extra large receive 29”.
