With so many different trail bikes on the market today, it seems as if every possible take or innovation has already been made. With variations in wheel sizes, wheel spacing, and geometry, there are more options than ever. BMC look to complicate choices even more by offering up the 2019 BMC Speedfox 02 TWO, a bike that looks to make life as simple and as easy as possible for prospective riders.
BMC started with their already-excellent existing Speedfox platform. The bike was already awesome, but they’ve updated their Advanced Pivot System (APS) by spacing the top pivots wider to make the whole rear swingarm platform stiffer. They’ve also retuned the 130mm rear shock for greater small-bump compliance, while the rear swingarms unconventionally-long stroke ensures smoothness regardless of how open the shock is. A 120 mm front shock complements that suppleness, and uses a slackened 68 degree headtube for smooth, confident cornering ability. Reach has been lengthened and the bottom bracket stays low to promote further stability.A n underbelly guard complements a driveside chainstay and drive side bottom bracket guard to protect the frame from trail abrasion and chain suck. A mudflap for the swingarm’s lower link neatly covers the bottom linkage from wear and tear, while keeping brake and derailleur cables tucked away for a clean, integrated look. BMC’s biggest integration trump card, called Trailsync, promises to change how you ride your bike on trails.
Trailsync is a BMC-exclusive technology that links rear suspension compression with the dropper post and ties it to a single cable-actuated remote lever. Rise or lower the dropper post through one of three pre-selected stops (fully dropped, 20 mm from the top, and top) and the rear shock goes from open to trail mode. This simplifies climbing and descending, leaving the suspension in the correct position every time, according to whether or not the saddle is dropped. This new dropper post is integrated into the frame for optimal synchronization with the rear shock as well as a look that is as clean as the rest of the frame. Using Trailsync is absolutely seamless; the bike is always left in the correct setting, and it leaves more time to actually prepare for that next drop in the trail instead of fiddling with buttons.
The 2019 BMC Speedfox 02 ONE features BMC’s premium carbon frame and alloy swingarm, and pairs it to a SRAM NX Eagle drivetrain, Shimano MT500 brakes, a 120 mm Fox DPS Performance Elite rear shock, a 120 mm RockShox Revelation RC fork, and DT Swiss XM 1700 30 Spline wheels. It is available in four sizes (S – XL); sizes small and medium receive 27.5” wheels, while medium, thru extra large receive 29”.
