Cannondale is a brand known for their consistent desire to innovate at nearly all costs. While Cannondale routinely made some of the best bikes around, their propriety parts often set people off. The 2019 Cannondale Jekyll 29 2 all-mountain bike might outwardly be a departure from what defined Cannondale for so long, but it’s smart design and impressive tech are still quintessential Cannondale.
The 2019 Cannondale Jekyll 29 is built above else as a point-and-shoot all-mountain that manages impressive agility despite the increase in wheel size. They do this with a custom single-pivot shock design, which places a leveraged link between the swingarm and shock in an effort to ensure the suspension remains active under breaking without sacrificing stiffness and durability. Paired to the slack 65 degree headtube angle and 75 degree seattube angle, and a 42 mm fork rake, the Jekyll 29 is modern in nearly every sense of the word. Each Jekyll 29 mountain bike uses a Ballistec Carbon frame and an alloy rear swingarm.
Cannondale’s Ai offset again makes an appearance here; while the rear wheel uses Boost spacing, Cannondale moves the hub 6mm to the right, making for a stronger wheel and shorter chainstays. Each Fox rear shock on the Jekyll 29 pairs to a Cannondale-specific Gemini air spring. Simply put, it reduces rear shock travel from 150 mm to 120 mm in two modes called Hustle and Flow, respectively. The Flow setting is unique in that it limits air-spring volume rather than simply increasing compression damping. This allows the shock to be fully active and predictable, regardless of suspension travel.
The 2019 Cannondale Jekyll 29 2 uses Cannondale’s carbon frame and alloy swingarm. Suspension is available thanks to the Fox Float Performance 36 fork and a Fox Float Performance Elite DPX2 EVOL rear shock, with 150 mm travel front and rear. A SRAM X02/GX Eagle 12-speed drivetrain pairs to a Stan’s NoTubes Flow Mk3/SRAM 900 hubset and Shimano Deore XT 4-piston brakes. A Cannondale alloy handlebar, a Fabric Scoop Shallow Elite saddle, a Cannondale DownLow dropper seatpost, and Maxxis Minion DHF 29 x 2.5″/Maxxis Minion DHR 2.4″ rear tires complete the build. The Jekyll 29 1 is available in four sizes (S-XL) in a Graphite with Jet Black and Charcoal colorway.
