Using their System Integration (Si) design, Cannondale has ensured that each part of the 2019 Cannondale Scalpel-Si Hi-Mod World Cup works together seamlessly to offer one of the best rides a XC bike has to offer. The bike’s BallisTec Carbon frame sets the tone for the entire bike, being lightweight and stiff while offering a comfortable feel on the trails. The bike achieves optimal traction and precise handling for unbelievable speeds while smoothing out the trail. Its Asymmetric Integration Offset Drivetrain (Ai) enhances the stiffness and the strength of the rear wheel, giving it tons of traction for quick acceleration . The Ai design is possible by shorter chainstays, accomplished by moving the chainrings and front derailleur 6mm outside and shifting the rear triangle over to match. You get better traction and handling this way and you don’t lose any tire clearance.
Let’s talk about the new fork in the room, the Cannondale Lefty Ocho. In a move that run counter to the “everything stiffer always” movement of the cycling industry, the Lefty Ocho is 14 percent less stiff torsionally than the old Lefty. They say it’s to improve the bike’s tracking ability in rough terrain, we like that the fork now works with standard tapered headtubes. We also like that the new Ocho is much more sensitive to small bumps than before, which is no small feat considering the already-high performance of the previous Lefty fork. By moving to four sets of roller bearing assemblies, dynamic friction (during movement) is reduced by 75%, and static friction is cut by a whopping 141% compared to a Rockshox SID or a Fox 32 Stepcast fork. Translation? The bike is as smooth as ever over small bumps, but feels surprisingly progressive in firmness as it goes deeper into the travel. The fork is lighter, more adjustable, and higher-performing than ever.
The 2019 Cannondale Scalpel-Si Hi-Mod World Cup is available in four sizes (S-XL). The ultralight carbon frameset pairs to a Cannondale Lefty Ocho Carbon 100mm suspension fork, a XX1 Eagle drivetrain, and SRAM Level Ultimate brakes. A ENVE M525/DT Swiss C36 hub wheelset is highlighted by a Cannondale carbon seatpost and carbon/alloy cockpit.
