More than ever, road bike riders have an insatiable need to get off the beaten path and explore dirt and gravel roads. With that kind of riding comes the need for the correct tool for the job, where wider tires and disc brakes become even more necessary. Bikes like the 2019 Cannondale Synapse Carbon Carbon Disc SE seek to become the right tool for the job, both as a gravel bike and an all-road road bike.
Disc brakes are quickly becoming de rigeur for bikes that are used for anything that isn’t purely road, and the Cannondale Synapse falls in line with that march. Disc brakes allow the frame to be optimized for 700 x 32c tires with room to spare, and allow for a full-length fender as well. This Synapse model shares the Synapse Active Vibration Elimination (SAVE) micro suspension technology with other Synapse models. In short, engineered flex zones are placed through the frame and fork to dampen road vibration and increase overall rider comfort. Parts like a bowed seat tube, a 25.4mm seatpost with integrated seat clamp (claimed 36% better vibration deflection), and a new fork reduces fatigue over a long ride while keeping the frame stiff where it needs to be.
On the road, the 2019 Cannondale Synapse Carbon Ultegra SE surprises in how it blends comfort and performance so seamlessly. By using size specific tubing profiles, head tubes, and steer tube diameters, Cannondale have sought to ensure a 48 cm Synapse handles and rides exactly as a 61cm bike, with the correct amount of stiffness to comfort in each frameset. This makes it feel great on the roads, especially over chip seal and rough roads. How does it feel over dirt or gravel? Because of the 21mm internal WTB rim and wide 30mm tire, it feels surefooted without being slow. Slightly higher fork trail across the whole size line further helps the bike feel surefooted where other bikes might feel squirrely.
The value of the 2019 Cannondale Synapse Carbon Disc Ultegra SE, comes in its versatility. It is an endurance road bike at its core, but the carbon seatpost, wider rims, and WTB tires make this ready to conquer the unbeaten path should the need arise. This model features a Shimano Ultegra drivetrain with a HollowGram Si crankset using compact (50/34) gearing, an 11-34 cassette, and a Cannondale SAVE Carbon seatpost. It uses WTB KOM i21 tubeless-ready rims to Formula Hubs, with a WTB Exposure 30c tire. It is available in six sizes (48-61 cm).
