Perhaps the most defining characteristic of the Juliana Joplin isn’t how it’s led the 29er cross country/trail bike scene for nearly a decade, nor is it that Juliana packs their best technologies into every model. Instead, the bike’s most defining characteristic is how fun a bike it is. This newest iteration of the Juliana Joplin CC full suspension women’s trail bike brings updated geometry and suspension kinematics, a bit more travel, and greater versatility, thanks to its ability to run both 29 and 27.5″+ wheels.
All of these changes are aimed at one thing—making the Joplin a more capable bike. Juliana starts with their top-end CC line of carbon frames and swingarms, which saves 250g over the standard carbon frameset. The Juliana Joplin – whose last iteration was much more capable than it’s 100mm travel suggested – now offers a 110mm shock out back, and a 120mm or 130mm fork for 29er or 27.5” + tires. A 68 degree head angle, short 432mm chainstays, and a rear shock flip chip develops the original Joplin’s playful character into something much more capable. The Joplin uses the Santa Cruz Virtual Pivot Point (VPP) suspension design. VPP uses two short suspension links that rotate in opposite directions as the bike moves through its travel. This results in a progressive suspension design, providing different levels of stiffness throughout the stages of its travel. This suspension design is widely-regarded as one of the most effective for isolating pedaling and braking forces from the suspension. Other neat touches include internal cable routing for a dropper post and rear derailleur, and a threaded bottom bracket. The Joplin also offers women’s specific suspension tuning (read: lighter weight) and touch points.
On the trail, it is blatantly clear that riders get what they pay for. While the frame is lightweight for it’s class, the bike climbs like it’s much lighter. It isn’t the best in class, but it does an impressively job of being a firm pedaling platform. The Joplin CC really comes alive on descents; point it down a mountain, and the bike is one of the best cross country or trail bikes on the market. It doesn’t feel like it’s has more than 110mm travel, but it’s designed to use all of it. It’s very linear and it lets riders know when they’re approaching the bike’s limits. The suspension overall feels very refined, and less precision-oriented than other XC mountain bikes.
