You’re short on time for your traditional ride; who isn’t? Between a myriad of obligations, cycling simply needs to be condensed into a shorter time frame. But what if you still want to do the same ride, just in a shorter time frame? There are plenty of pedal assist electric bikes out there that will do the job. But what if you want a bike that provides a helping hand, but still feels rewarding? Enter the 2019 Orbea Gain D20 e-road bike.
Orbea’s aim with the Gain D20 is to make a bike whose electric motor doesn’t dominate the ride, but merely complements it. Their design is based around a rear wheel built around a hub-motor that offers 250 W power and 40 Nm torque. This motor, the Ebikemotion X35, is powered by a 250 Wh battery integrated in the downtube. Torque is doled out with a buttery smoothness unlike most other motors around, often to the point of hardly noticing how much assistance you’re actually receiving going up a hill. Further, the rear-mounted motor is inherently drag-free when not using pedal assist, and the whole system’s low weight of eight pounds makes for an e-bike that certainly doesn’t handle with the sluggishness and heft of a traditional e-bike.
Orbea pairs this motor to what they call their iWoc ONE controller. This controller consists of a single LED-backlit that displays battery life and assist levels. Need more information? Pair your Orbea Gain to the Ebikemotion app, which shows exact battery life, power output, and even offers GPS navigation. It cuts down overall clutter around the bars, and provides all of the information one would need for most riding. Along with the bike’s interface and low weight of the combined Ebikemotion system (under 8 pounds), the Gain handles much like a standard gravel bike. Handling, even with the extra weight, is hardly different; there’s real a sense of purpose and poise to how the bike handles. It also doesn’t feel all that different than a standard bike above the bike’s 20 mph assist cutoff.
The 2019 Orbea Gain D20 pedal assist all-road bike starts with the Gain alloy frame and carbon fork, as well as the Ebikemotion X35 drive motor. This is accompanied by a Shimano Ultegra R8000 drivetrain, a Ready GR wheelset, Hutchinson Fusion TLR 700 x 28c tires and a FSA cockpit and seatpost. Five sizes are available (XS-XL) in a Orange-Black, a Red/Grey/White, or a or a Graphite-Anthracite matte colorway.
