The Orbea Gain is a plenty versatile bicycle from the start. Space for a 700 x 40c tire is nice, but capability of being an excellent road bike with narrower tires is fun to have. Gain Carbon is light, fast, and very much performance-oriented, but the alloy frame model seemingly expands the Gain’s capabilities as a multi-faceted choice. The 2019 Orbea Gain F30 pedal assist electric bike further expands the bike’s capabilities as an urban e-bike that shares speedy DNA, but is perfectly suited for the city.
Orbea’s approach is based around a rear wheel built around a hub-motor that offers 250 W power and 40 Nm torque. This motor, the Ebikemotion X35, is powered by a 250 Wh battery integrated in the downtube. Torque is doled out with a buttery smoothness unlike most other motors around, often to the point of hardly noticing how much assistance you’re actually receiving going up a hill. Further, the rear-mounted motor is inherently drag-free when not using pedal assist, and the whole system’s low weight of eight pounds makes for an e-bike that certainly doesn’t handle with the sluggishness and heft of a traditional e-bike.
Orbea pairs this motor to what they call their iWoc ONE controller. This controller consists of a single LED-backlit that displays battery life and assist levels. Need more information? Pair your Orbea Gain to the Ebikemotion app, which shows exact battery life, power output, and even offers GPS navigation. It cuts down overall clutter around the bars, and provides all of the information one would need for most riding. Along with the bike’s interface and low weight of the combined Ebikemotion system (under 8 pounds). Handling, even with the extra weight, is hardly different, much less any heavier than a normal commuter bike. It also doesn’t feel all that different than a standard bike above the bike’s 20 mph assist cutoff, and is offers strong performance to maintain speeds higher than 20 mph
The 2019 Orbea Gain F30 pedal assist all-road bike starts with the Gain alloy frame and carbon fork, as well as the Ebikemotion X35 drive motor. This is accompanied by a Shimano Claris 8 speed drivetrain, an Airline Corsa wheelset, and Kenda 700 x 38c tires. Five sizes are available (XS-XL) in a Black Matte/Gloss, a Green Matte/Gloss, or a Blue Matte/Gloss colorway.
