Long travel 29er mountain bikes are some of the hardest bikes on the market to successfully design. These riders require a bike with enough suspension travel to tackle gnarly, rutted trails, but it also needs to climb efficiently without feeling worthless. While there are many brands that do an effective job of tackling all of these needs, few companies do it as well Orbea has on the 2019 Orbea Rallon M-Team.
The most distinctive element of the Rallon is it’s asymmetric front triangle that features a tube running from the top tube to the seat tube on the non-drive side, leaving the shock exposed on the other side. While it looks impressive, Orbea did this to increase front triangle stiffness in an effort to improve shock performance and cornering ability. Boasting 150mm of rear travel (and 160mm front travel) through Orbea’s own ‘Advance Dynamics’ four bar linkage suspension design, the Rallon is designed to help limit the disruption of the shock with braking forces combined with a high pivot point and a claimed improvement in both progressiveness and linear suspension action over the previous Rallon design, achieving this with a collaboration with suspension experts Fox. Neat features like a threaded bottom bracket, an integrated downtube protector, and the ability to run 180mm post mount brakes demonstrate the bike’s versatility.
Orbea has used their top of the line OMR carbon technology for the Rallon. The full range features the same monocoque frame and the same carbon fibers. This leads to an exceptionally lightweight bike that handles and climbs like a bike with less travel, thanks partially as well to a steep 76 degree seat tube angle and stubby chainstays. It isn’t until the descents that Orbea’s smart design makes itself known: it stays calm under rough straights, but does a good job of being agile through tight corners. The Rallon is tuned for high performance first and foremost, and it makes this DNA known by how it handles calmly under all situations.
The 2019 Orbea Rallon M-TEAM uses an OMR carbon fiber frame and rear swingarm, and a DT Swiss E-1501 Spline 30 29” wheelset. Suspension is provided by Fox 36 Float Factory Kashima 160mm front fork, a 150mm Fox Float X2 Kashima rear suspension, and a Race Face Turbine dropper seatpost work effortlessly and reliably. The bike finishes with SRAM GX Eagle drivetrain throughout. The Rallon is available in three sizes (S/M, L, XL), in a Purple/Light Blue matte, Blue/Mint matte,.and Red/Black matte colorways.
