Mountain biking can be expensive. Not only can the initial cost of a decent mountain bike be prohibitive, but the cost of consumables and riding in general can cost more than other sports. With that in mind, many look for a “quiver killer”, a bike that likes to go fast up down, around, and in the air. While Santa Cruz has several potential quiver-killers, few truly fill the bracket as well as the Santa Cruz 5010 trail bike. Well-priced, with excellent spec and thoughtful design, the 2019 Santa Cruz 5010 C might be as close to a quiver killer as the storied companies has.
The 2019 Santa Cruz 5010 C is built for riders who love to climb as much as they love to shred descents. This is thanks largely to it’s Virtual Pivot Point (VPP) suspension kinematics and 130mm travel front and rear. When it’s time to descend, the bike’s 66-degree head tube angle, and generous 15mm greater reach make for precise and confident handling. The bike also receives ample space for 27.5 x 2.8” tires and requisite mud clearance as well, just like every other 5010 model. What makes the 5010 C unique? Well, in Santa Cruz parlance it refers to their entry-level carbon frame. At just 250-270g heavier than the pricier CC model, it still offers the same suspension kinematics, ride stiffness, and durability.
While it might have a longer toptube, slacker front end, and longer wheelbase than before, it isn’t designed to float over techy terrain. Instead, the 5010 is meant to play and within that terrain. It is quick and nimble, and well-prepared for the kinds of trail riding found in Northern Utah, while never being overmatched in the big features of Southern Utah. 27.5” wheels make the bike nimble through rocky trails, but definitely don’t offer the roll over capability of a larger 29er wheel size. It features an extremely low standover clearance through the whole range of bikes, providing ample clearance clearance for nearly whatever dropper seatpost you’d like.
The new 5010 is all about balance and poise, and the whole package has it in spades. Now more than ever, however, it’s also an excellent bike for someone who isn’t as confident to have a grippy setup with it’s plus tire option.
The 2019 Santa Cruz 5010 C is available in five sizes (XS-XL), two colorways ( and ), and two build kits, with a choice of 27.5″ (2.3″/2.3″ tires) or 27.5”+ (2.6″ tires) wheels:
