The cycling world tends to be in a state of division regarding bicycle quality and kit. Many feel that one needs little more than two pedal-powered wheels to get the most out of cycling joy. Others feel that they needs nothing less than the best to enjoy riding. For those looking for the epitome of “bike doping”, the 2019 Santa Cruz Bronson CC long travel 27.5” mountain bike not only carries some of the best technology Santa Cruz has to offer, in a package that is undeniably capable, poised, and fun.
The second generation Bronson was a popular bike. It was originally called an enduro race bike, but really it was seen more as an excellent all-mountain bike that could reasonably fill the role of the “quiver killer.” The newest generation of the Santa Cruz Bronson pushes further toward versatility as an all-arounder. The new frame starts with a revised lower-link mounted VPP suspension design, similar to what’s found on the Santa Cruz Nomad. With a 33 percent leverage ratio (compared to the 45 of the Nomad), the Bronson is designed to offer a barely-noticeable bottom out, improved mid-stroke support, and an improvement on the Bronson’s strong pedaling performance. They’ve paired this to a RockShox Super Deluxe Air rear shock, which promises small bump smoothness and a similar amount of responsiveness to a good coil shock. The frameset is now 1x only, which has allowed Santa Cruz to stiffen up the rear swingarm to provide greater responsiveness under cornering loads while cutting weight.
Reach measurements increase 10-15mm in each size (dependent upon the frame’s flip chip location), and an inch lower seatpost collar allows for lower standover height across all sizes as well as greater dropper seatpost compatibility. A 65 degree headtube angle makes it even more predictable on descents. The bike is now designed to take a plus size tire; while both bikes can fit a 2.8” tire with space, the plus option comes with a 2.6” tire. It’s not plus per say, but Santa Cruz claims that it’s an excellent option that provides the traction of a 2.8” tire, and the precision and support of a 2.25” tire. We’re inclined to agree.
The 2019 Santa Cruz Bronson CC all mountain bike leads riders to ride faster and over techy terrain that might flummox a lesser bike. It’s plenty light and feels great launching off of jumps, whether on the trail or at the bike park. Money might not make a cyclist any faster, but riders will certainly have more fun on this bike.
The 2019 Santa Cruz Bronson CC is available in five sizes (XS-XL), two colorways ( and), and four build kits, with a choice of 27.5″ (2.5″/2.4″ tires) or 27.5”+ (2.6″ tires) wheels:
