The original Santa Cruz Tallboy debuted in 2009 as a 100mm full suspension 29er in a world where the 29” wagon wheel size was seen more as a fad than a viable wheel size option. It proved that a 29er could be sprightly, nimble, and most importantly fun. It changed how mountain bike companies approached their future designs, and more than anything it was the father of the modern-day 29er cross country mountain bike. The newest iteration of the Santa Cruz Tallboy strikes a balance in the 100-120mm full suspension world as an adept climber but one of the most impressive descending bikes money can buy. With both 29” and 27.5” + wheel sizes, the Tallboy continues to be one of the best full suspension mountain bikes available at any price.
Over the years, cross country mountain bikes from every brand have been injected with more “rowdy”; like the long travel bikes that are growing in popularity, these normally-conservative bikes are more than ever blurring the lines between traditional XC bikes and trail bikes. The Santa Cruz Tallboy – whose last iteration was much more capable than it’s 100mm travel suggested – now offers a 110mm shock out back, and a 120mm or 130mm fork for 29er or 27.5” + tires. A 68 degree head angle, VPP kinematics, and a rear shock flip chip develops the original Tallboy’s playful character into something much more capable. Longer reach and shorter chainstays fuel that personality on the Tallboy C, which uses a carbon fiber frame and swingarm that matches the more-expensive CC frameset in stiffness and overall strength, but is much more inexpensive.
While travel has increased from 100mm of the original to the 120mm or 130mm/110mm of the current bike, it’s role as a premier cross country/trail bike is cemented. It is still very much a bike that climbs tight trails with great poise, never feeling sluggish, or that the front wheel was too unweighted. On the descents, however, it feels faster, and again is much more capable than it’s 110mm travel suggests. It may not be the lightest choice for the dedicated cross country racer, but for someone who enjoys climbing as much as they do descending, the Tallboy should be at the top of the list.
Equip it with the 130mm fork and available 27.5” + wheel size, and the wider tires float over dusty corners and find grip better than any normal tire size, while it’s extra tire volume make it feel like it has more than just 130mm travel. Equip it with 29er wheels and the bike is just plain fast right out the gate. Despite it being built for XC exploits, it is a through and through Santa Cruz, built to be confidence-inspiring everywhere.
