It’s easy to fall in love with a superbike like the Scott Spark RC 900 SL. Not only is new full carbon wheelset a sight to behold, but its svelte sub-21 pound weight is absolutely jaw-dropping. The truth of the matter is that while cross country mountain bikes like that might exist, many of those impressive attributes don’t translate to their lesser models. Fortunately for Scott bikes, many of those desirable attributes are deeply ingrained into those other price points; the 2019 Scott Contessa Spark 930 is an excellent example of that.
Much of the character of those high-end Spark cross country mountain bikes comes from highly-revised rear suspension and swingarm kinematics. Every Scott Spark uses an updated trunnion-mount rear shock, new rocker link, and pivotless alloy swingarm; the Contessa Spark 930 is no exception. Updates to suspension design allow for improved small-bump sensitivity, mid-travel support, and excellent stroke adaptability. As a result, it’s women’s-tuned suspension resists bottoming out toward the end of its travel to make the bike feel it has much more rear travel than merely 120mm.
The pivotless alloy swingarm improves reliability, cuts weight, and increases out-of-saddle stiffness, and connects together via a carbon rocker link. Scott’s TwinLoc remote suspension lever is also employed; flip the suspension through three distinct spring compression and damping settings (open, traction, lockout), allowing riders to adapt to just about any kind of terrain.
The most obvious lineage the Scott Contessa Spark has to its pricier siblings comes in its handling prowess. It features the same updated geometry as the other Spark models, meaning a slacker head tube angle, longer reach measurements across the range, shorter chainstays, and a steeper seat tube angle. In short, the bike rips; not only does it climb well, but descending is a treat. It isn’t as twitchy other cross country bike, but it definitely climbs as well as they do (and much better than comparable trail bikes). This allows the bike to excel when the ride calls for climbing as well as descending, with a similar verve and spunk to its carbon-infused brethren.
The 2019 Scott Contessa Spark 930 features a SRAM NX Eagle drivetrain, Shimano MT500 brakes, and a Syncros X-25S to Shimano hub wheelset move the bike along. A 120mm RockShox Judy RL Solo Air fork and X-Fusion NUDE rear shock keep everything under control, and a Syncros 2.5 dropper seatpost ensures that you, the rider, stays in control on descents. The bike is available in three sizes (S-L).
