Scott bikes have a reputation for pushing the envelope when it comes to versatility. Each mountain bike they’ve released in the past few years not only is able to deal with varying terrains with great efficiency, but they’ve done it with lighter weight and smarter engineering. For 2019, Scott pushed the envelope once again on what a trail bike is capable of by redesigning their heralded 2019 Scott Genius 940, a bike that promises lower weight, greater versatility, and higher overall performance than their outgoing bike.
The new 2019 Scott Genius 940 starts with a clean slate on design. They’ve taken advances made from the championship-winning Scott Spark chassis to cut weight and increase overall stiffness, with the most obvious being a trunnion-mount shock orientation. While this orientation frees up the top tube to be lower and lighter-weight, it also forces the bottom bracket to be beefed up to support loads from trail use. Scott have also used the new shock orientation to simplify the swingarm design to incorporate less moving parts. This stiffens up the Genius pedaling platform considerably, increases small-bump sensitivity, and cuts weight across the range.
When it comes to performance enhancements, Scott didn’t stop at a new shock mount; they’ve looked to make the bike more versatile. They’ve refined their TwinLoc suspension such that each suspension setting (150mm travel, 100mm travel, lockout) has unique compression dampening and spring curves for the front suspension and rear shock, easily controllable from a small handlebar remote. Scott have also included a new flip chip in the rear swingarm that changes the frame’s geometry depending on use with 27.5” or 29” wheels without swapping out the fork. A new downtube bash guard not only protects the frame from rock strikes, but it neatly tucks away a Shimano Di2 battery and allows for easy access to cable routing. Finally, Scott included an integrated chain guard to prevent chainsuck, and an integrated Syncros Trail Fender to protect the frame and fork seals from mud splatter. These new features enable the Genius to perfectly suit a rider’s needs for what may lie ahead.
A redesign as comprehensive as this wouldn’t be complete without updated geometry, and Scott deliver on this front. The Genius headtube is impressively slack (65 degrees), chainstays are impressively short (438mm), and seattube angles are steeper across the range. Use the TwinLoc remote to stiffen up the suspension for demanding climbs and it scampers up the trail with xc-like efficiency. Once the trail stops pointing towards the sky, open the suspension, drop the saddle, and the Genius 940 transforms into a ripping machine that carries speed like few other trail bikes on the market today.
The 2019 Scott Genius 940 comes spec’d with a full alloy frame and swingarm, and only comes with 29” wheels (but is easily switchable to 27.5” with a different wheelset). It features a SRAM GX/NX Eagle drivetrain, a Syncros 2.0 dropper seatpost, and a Syncros X30-S wheelset. A Fox 34 Float Performance Air fork with 44mm offset & a Fox NUDE EVOL rear shock bring 150mm of travel each. Scott offer four sizes for everyone, from small to extra large.
