The hardtail mountain bike isn’t dead. With more and more technology coming out year after year, hardtails are becoming more versatile by the year. Some have become more enduro worthy, and some of developed integrated methods to calm the bumps, all in the name of making their bikes ever-versatile. The 2019 Scott Scale RC 900 SL takes all of improvements into one sub-20 lb high-performance hardtail mountain bike.
The 2019 Scott Scale RC SL starts life with Scott’s HMX-SL carbon, optimized for 1x drivetrains. This carbon, used originally on their top-grade road bikes, it’s stiffened and strengthened to offer increased strength off the trail, ideal stiffness out of the saddle, and 20% stiffer and 21% better vertical compliance compared to previous frame. All in, the SL frame weighs in at a paltry 849 g. Other important features include a 69 degree headtube angle, long reach, and geometry ready for trails outside the dedicated cross country course or short track.
Scott have included all of their latest tech in an effort to make the Spark RC SL the best bike possible. Up front is the Syncros Fraser Sl iC integrate bar and stem. This offers more direct steering compared to a standard stem and handlebar, and manages to severely cut weight at just 220g. Syncros also provide the Syncros Silverton 1.0 SL wheels. Made entirely of carbon, they are the fastest, lightest wheel Syncros could make without sacrificing reliability, ride balance, and performance . At 1250g, it’s over 100% stiffer torsionally than a standard carbon wheel HMX-SL frame.
The 2019 Scott Scale RC SL uses Scott’s HMX-SL carbon frame, and pairs it to a 100mm Fox 32 Stepcast Factory fork. A Shimano XTR 1 x 12 drivetrain, Syncros Silverton 1.0 SL wheels with DT Swiss internals, and Syncros carbon fiber components complete the package. The Scale RC SL is available in four sizes (S-XL).
