The full suspension cross country mountain bike has absolutely taken over. They’re rarely much heavier than an equivalent hardtail, but their rear suspension makes getting traction that much easier, and that much more comfortable on descents. For longer marathon racing? Many still prefer the lighter, stiffer hardtail mountain bike. Cannondale, maker of one of the most progressive cross country hardtails around, offers the new for 2020 Cannondale F-Si Carbon Women’s 2 mountain bike. Packed with technology, the new F-Si is faster, smoother, and more capable than ever.
The new F-Si starts with a wholesale rethink of the hardtail frameset. Gone is the quick release rear skewer in exchange for a speed release thru axle. An integrated seatpost clamp cuts weight and adds increases in-saddle compliance. The frame still uses an Ai-offset rear wheel design, but paired to Boost 148mm rear wheel spacing, the drivetrain is 6mm outboard compared to a standard rear end. This is also 3mm more than a typical Boost bike, and results in a much stronger rear wheel. The bike offers short 427mm chainstays, loads of tire clearance around a 2.35” tire, and space for a front derailleur. The geometry has been overhauled as well, and each frameset receives longer reach across all models, a slacker headtube angle, and a 55mm fork rake to make the bike a more confident handler through techier terrain.
Cannondale’s new F-Si also receives the all-new Cannondale Lefty Ocho fork. The Ocho removes the previous dual-crown for setup for a single crown fork and a standard tapered headset. Added in is a move from three to four roller bearings, which Cannondale say reduces dynamic friction (during movement) by 75%, and static friction is cut by a whopping 141% compared to a Rockshox SID or a Fox 32 Stepcast fork, while making the fork lighter than a comparable Rockshox SID fork. The Lefty’s calling card is it’s smoothness, and the Ocho is smoother over small bumps than any previous Lefty. Further, the new fork is lighter, more adjustable, and higher-performing than ever, and offers very direct steering like the very best Lefty forks.
The 2020 Cannondale F-Si Carbon Women’s 2 is available in three sizes (XS-M), with size XS offering 27.5” wheels. The carbon fiber frameset pairs to a Cannondale Lefty Ocho 100mm suspension fork, a SRAM NX Eagle drivetrain, Truvativ Stylo 6K crankset, and Shimano MT500 brakes. A WTB STX i23 TCS/Formula hub wheelset is highlighted by a Cannondale alloy seatpost, alloy cockpit, and a Prologo Kappa Dea RS saddle.
