With a thoughtful System Integration (Si) design, the 2020 Cannondale Scalpel-Si Carbon 4 is more than just a cross-country bike, it’s a well-oiled machined for screaming descents and crazy climbs too. Starting with BallisTec Carbon frame, this bike is built light and stiff. It is designed for optimal traction and precise handling for blazing speeds on the trails. Its Asymmetric Integration Offset Drivetrain (Ai) enhancing the stiffness and the strength of the rear wheel allowing for killer traction in back . The Ai design is made possible by the bike’s shorter chainstays. This was accomplished by moving the chainrings and front derailleur 6mm outside and shifting the rear triangle over to match. Not only do you get better traction and handling, you don’t lose any tire clearance.
Cannondale’s Scalpel-Si also receives the all-new Cannondale Lefty Ocho fork. The Ocho removes the previous dual-crown for setup for a single crown fork and a standard tapered headset. Added in is a move from three to four roller bearings, which Cannondale say reduces dynamic friction (during movement) by 75%, and static friction is cut by a whopping 141% compared to a Rockshox SID or a Fox 32 Stepcast fork, while making the fork lighter than a comparable Rockshox SID fork. The Lefty’s calling card is it’s smoothness, and the Ocho is smoother over small bumps than any previous Lefty. Further, the new fork is lighter, more adjustable, and higher-performing than ever, and offers very direct steering like the very best Lefty forks.
With Cannondale’s LOCKR Pivot System, the Cannondale Scalpel-Si Carbon 4 is light and strong. It uses an expanding thru-axle to locks the two sides of the swingarm together giving it a more stable feel while also saving on weight, no special tools required. Zero Pivot Flexstays at the rear triangle eliminate further weight by eliminating the need for bearings. For customization, the bike features interchangeable cable guide inserts for different cable set-ups with housing locks to keep things clean and secured. It also has a System Integrated Di2 battery compartment that fits into the top tube so you can run a dropper post and a Di2 battery in unison.
The 2020 Cannondale Scalpel-Si Carbon 4 is available in four sizes (S-XL). The carbon fiber frameset pairs to a Cannondale Lefty Ocho 100mm suspension fork, a RockShox Monarch RL rear shock, a SRAM NX Eagle drivetrain, Truvativ Stylo 6K crankset, and SRAM Level TL brakes. A Stan’s Crest S1/Formula hub wheelset is highlighted by a Cannondale alloy seatpost, alloy cockpit, and a Fabric Scoop Elite saddle.
