Cyclists addicted to speed will rarely agree with the phrase “smoother is faster” when it comes to a bicycle. This is because typical go-fast road bikes are the antithesis of this; they tend to feel jarring, sharp, and unforgiving over choppy roads. Cannondale seek to prove this assumption wrong, and they do so with the new 2020 Cannondale Synapse. The 2020 Cannondale Synapse Carbon Disc Ultegra Di2 puts that very idea at the forefront of its design, to make a bike that is comfortable, efficient, and fast exactly where you need it to be.
Cannondale went in every direction possible to make the Synapse smoother, starting with their Synapse Active Vibration Elimination (SAVE) system. They engineered flex zones through the frame and fork to dampen road vibration and increase overall rider comfort. To do so, they’ve included parts such as a 25.4mm seatpost with integrated seat clamp (claimed 36% better vibration deflection), and a new fork with a special offset. Cannondale have introduced size-specific tubing profiles, head tubes, and steer tube diameters, to make sure the Synapse rides just as intended for every size range: smoothly, without isolating the rider from enjoying the ride. They’ve also added tire clearance: the bike can now fit up to a 32c tire with clearance to spare, and fender mounts add to the Synapse’s practicality.
Many brands claim breakthroughs in comfort and performance with every iteration, but the efforts Cannondale have gone through really make a difference on the road. Headtube stiffness is up by 10%, ensuring the bike tracks with precision through tight corners. Cannondale also spec size-specific tubing profiles, head tubes, and steer tube diameters to ensure each Synapse handles and rides exactly as they intended it, regardless of size. It handles precisely through high-speed corners (such as your favorite canyon). The Synapse still features that impressive plushness and absorbance over imperfect roads, allowing the rider to focus without distraction on putting power to the pedals. Disc brakes bring you to a stop with little effort, regardless of how long the ride has been.
The 2020 Cannondale Synapse Carbon Disc Ultegra Di2 features a Shimano Ultegra Di2 8070 drivetrain with a Cannondale Si crankset. It uses a Fulcrum Racing 600 DB wheelset, a Cannondale carbon seatpost, and Vittoria Rubino 700 x 28c tires. It is available in six sizes (48-61 cm).
