For more on the new Orbea Occam, see our first look HERE.
Orbea has been on a roll lately in regards to mountain bike design. The Occam is one of our favorite long-travel 29er mountain bikes on the market, while the Oiz makes a killing as an ultralight cross-country mountain bike. Next in line is the new Orbea Occam trail bike, and specifically, the 2020 Orbea Occam M30 bike, refocused as a well-balanced 29er trail bike with 140 mm suspension travel.
Each Occam M-series model shares the same OMR carbon frame. Occam uses a four-bar Horst link suspension with a concentric pivot rear end based off the Rallon. This, paired to the asymmetric frame brace that joins the downtube and seat tube, make for a bike with stiffness where necessary and flex everywhere else. Orbea aims the Occam to be an all-around trail crusher; the move to a 29er-only platform that uses a 140 mm shock and a choice of 140 mm or 150 mm travel fork makes the Occam ready for just about anything the trail has to throw at you.
This pairs to extremely modern trail bike geometry: a 77-degree seat tube angle, a 66-degree head tube angle, a 44 mm-offset fork, and just right reach numbers that are suitably bumped up compared to the previous model. They’ve paired this to lower standover heights in each size for longer dropper posts and a lower bottom bracket for improved stability.
Orbea sweat the details when it comes to the Occam. You’ll find a built-in chain guide, internal cable routing, and a threaded bottom bracket on all frames. Rubber frame protectors around the bottom bracket and chainstays with raised ribs to keep chain slap noise to a minimum and Enduro MAX bearings ensure the Occam’s riding longevity.
The 2020 Orbea Occam M30 trail bike is based around an OMR carbon frame, a 140 mm Fox Float DPS Performance EVOL rear shock, and a Fox 34 Performance fork with 140 mm travel. Orbea pairs this to a Shimano SLX M7100 drivetrain with a Shimano Deore XT M8100 rear derailleur, a 10-51t 12-speed cassette, and Shimano BR520 four-piston brakes. A DT Swiss M1900 Spline 30c TLR wheelset, Fizik Taiga saddle, 150 mm dropper post, and Maxxis Rekon 29 x 2.4” tires complete the package. Occam is available in four sizes (S-XL).
