Our collective heads turned when Lauf came by the shop. The Lauf Grit gravel bike fork impressed us with it’s unique ability to transform any gravel or cyclocross bike into something much more confident over dirt without sacrificing anything else in performance. We were floored by the True Grit gravel bike, because it included that technology in a no-nonsense package that undercut many other gravel bikes on price. The brand’s newest bike, the Lauf Anywhere Weekend Warrior gravel bike, goes back to basics, with a rigid fork, fork mounts, and an eye toward the pavement.
The Anywhere uses the same frame as the True Grit, with a 68mm threaded bottom bracket and the same long/low geometry designed for speed and stability. Lauf underwent serious testing to ensure the frame meets the ISO standard for mountain bike frames, but managed to keep the frame light at 1070 g. Other features include three water bottle mounts on the frame, a top tube feed bag mount, and clearance for a 700 x 45c tire. While it lacks the Grit SL fork found on the True Grit, it gains an all-new rigid fork called the Lauf JAF. It features a shorter 400 mm axle-to-crown measurement, which steepens the headtube angle slightly for on-road agility. It also changes the mission of the bike, from a singletrack-destroying gravel muncher into something much more road worthy.
While it does miss the composite leaf spring fork, the Anywhere features the new Lauf Smoothie handlebar. The Smoothie makes use of the same S2 glassfiber that Lauf uses for its leaf springs to offer vibration absorption and strength. The bar is fairly wide, with a 16 degree flare to the drops for greater access to the brake levers, and a slight 3 degree backsweep on the top of the handlebars. The unique aprt of the handlebar is an abrupt 90 degree bend at the ends. It offers a larger effective platform to rest palms, and a logical transition between the top part of the handlebar, the hoods, and the drops.
The Lauf Anywhere Weekend Warrior gravel bike features the Anywhere carbon frame, full carbon fork, and a SRAM Apex 1 drivetrain. A DT Swiss X1900 wheelset, Lauf Smoothie handlebar, FSA stem, Easton seatpost and Maxxis Velocita AR 700 x 40c tires. Anywhere is available in five sizes (XS-XL).
