Simply put, the Lauf True Grit Ultimate gravel bike is as serious as it gets. The Ultimate highlights the True Grit frameset with a SRAM RED eTap AXS/SRAM XX1 AXS wireless drivetrain, ENVE G23 wheels, and an impressively light 17 lb weight out of the box. It is the very best gravel bike components on the market with one of the best gravel frames around; what more could you want?
The carbon fiber frame takes aggressive gravel bike geometry and adds on to it: a long top tube, slack 70.5º head angle with low stack and short stem, and stubby 425mm chainstays are added all in the name of straight-line stability. The frame fits up to a 700 x 45c tire front and rear (40c max with a front derailleur). Other neat features include a threaded bottom bracket for greater reliability, three bottle cage mounts as well as a bento box mount on the top tube, and a built-in bottle opener where there would normally be a front derailleur. The frame uses a 12x142mm axle at the rear and a 15x100mm axle up front. Despite meeting the ISO standard for mountain bike frames, the True Grit frame weighs in at just 1070g for a frame with hardware.
The key technology on display is the Lauf Grit SL Fork. It’s 30mm of travel does wonders in making the bike feel much more controllable and confidence-inspiring when the going gets loose. Out of the saddle, the leaf spring fork feels nearly imperceptible. The fork flexes minimally and has none of the bobbing sensations that other suspension alternatives might feel. The Grit SL fork very definitively takes the edge off of bumps, which over the course of a long ride, can cut a ride short due to fatigue. Over rough, technical terrain, it doesn’t work as well as a traditional suspension, but that’s to be expected when the fork feels as stiff as it does when climbing. How does the rest of the bike feel? It’s definitely a gravel bike; it doesn’t have quick turn-in like a race road bike, but it doesn’t need that. The bike accelerates well and maintains speed easily.
All in, the Lauf True Grit Ultimate is among the best gravel bikes on the market today. It is surprisingly lightweight despite the addition of a suspension fork, and covers gravel roads with a poise that is nearly unmatchable compared to its competition.
The Lauf True Grit is available in four basic kits: The Lauf True Grit Race Ultimate (SRAM RED eTap AXS/XX1 Eagle AXS, ENVE wheels), the True Grit Race AXS (Force AXS/X01 AXS), the True Grit Race Edition (SRAM Force 1), and the True Grit Weekend Warrior (SRAM Rival 1).
