Perhaps the biggest misnomer in the gravel bike world is the idea that because the OPEN U.P. and the 3T Exploro gravel bikes have the same swooping chainstay and are both designed by Gerard Vroomen, that they're the same bike. The truth is that it couldn't be further from the truth. The Exploro designed as perhaps the only aero gravel bike on the market, has far more aggressive geometry, and has the credentials to back it up. However, if you wanted to do custom paint, you were limited to the broad strokes of the OPEN U.P.; at least, until now. Finally, 3T offers the possibility to create your own rideable form of expression, the 3T Exploro Team Frameset (Ready to Paint).
The 3T Exploro Team seems a bit convoluted at first. It's aero tubing is reminiscent of the fastest road bikes around, and it has the tech to back up it's unique design. They call this Realfast; by testing at a realistic 20 mph, with water bottles and 3D-printed mud, the Sqareo (teardrop shape into a square, like a Kamm tail) tubes are faster than an equivalent standard road bike with 28mm slicks without tubes. Wild. These truncated sqaero tubes are found on the headtube, seattube, seatstays and seatpost, and make the bike surprisingly quick both on and off the road.
Gerard Vroomen has put his Gravel Plus concept to great use here too, and in doing so allowing the rider - using one set of 700c wheels - to run their choice of road tires, from 23-40mm wide to rugged cyclocross rubber with ample clearance for either. This design can also run a set of 27.5 mountain bike wheels with up to a 2.2 inch knobby, giving you the chance to ride a road bike where there is no road. Offered as a frame and fork only, there are almost endless options in building your Exploro to best suit your needs. Dirt drop bar with 2-inch knobbies? No problem. Supple 40c tires, Di2 shifting and ENVE aero bars? Can do.
Compared to OPEN's own U.P. RTP framesets, the 3T Exploro Team RTP frameset costs $200 less than the painted model and is primered and ready to paint out of the box (and can even be ridden in its primered state for a 200g weight savings). Perhaps most importantly, the Exploro actually has different geometry. The chainstays happen to be shorter (at 415mm, its shorter than many endurance road bikes), reach is longer across all sizes, and stack is significantly different as well. The result is a ride similar to the very best road bikes on the market but with quite a bit more smoothness thanks to a wider tire. Call it a gravel bike, road plus, or road-x; it's a remarkable ride, one that assuredly makes the Exploro one of the best bikes available at any price point.
Why choose the 3T Exploro Team Frameset (Ready to Paint)? Because you want to create a bike that is truly an extension of your style and taste, perhaps with the same desirability of the most beautiful one-off bikes around. We offer an inside line to custom paint, in any way you'd like it. Everything is done with a wet paint, even down to the 3T logo on the downtube. Custom paint generally costs $350-800, depending on the paint scheme. Some examples can be seen HERE. With a wide array of paints in both gloss and matte, the color of your next 3T frameset is only limited to your imagination.
The 3T Exploro Team (Ready to Paint) comes in four sizes (S-XL), in a dark primer grey. This frame is prepped and ready to paint right out of the box, or can be run as-is with a 200-gram weight savings. Prices start at $3000, and come with a 3T Exploro Team frame in raw carbon. Choose our custom two-tone paint option (+$350) to select your frame color and logo color, in gloss or satin finish options.
