The 2021 Santa Cruz Tallboy CC X-01 has inched away from its roots as a pure cross country bike with little more travel than most previous models and a tweak in geometry that allows for more aggressive and faster climbing.
Rocking 29 inch wheels, the Tallboy gets its name from being an early adopter of the rock-munching wheel size. Rolling over obstacles and maintaining speed is no problem on single track trails or when tackling tricky ascents with a bike checking in at a surprisingly light 28.4 pounds with its Santa Cruz CC carbon frame.
A RockShox Pike Ultimate fork with 130mm travel and a Fox Float Factory DPS shock with 120mm travel help make the descents more manageable, faster and more fun. The lower-link VPP suspension creates improved handling and an overall better riding experience.
The Santa Cruz Tallboy CC X-01 is built up with a responsive SRAM X01 1x12 drivetrain and reliable SRAM G2 hydraulic disc brakes. RaceFace ARC Offset wheels and Maxxis Minion tires create excellent traction and responsive acceleration with smooth, dependable rolling.
Established theory suggests shorter travel bikes get ridden slower, therefore require steeper and more conservative geometries. In reality though, when was the last time you ever throttled back on a fun trail because you weren’t on a bigger bike? Caution to the wind and all that. So we’ve done the same here and mimicked our longer travel geometry to create a bike with a 65.5-degree head-angle, generous front center, and short offset fork. Something rarely seen on a bike of this ilk.
And the radical thinking doesn’t stop there. The Tallboy’s short-short 430mm chainstays have +/- 10mm of rear axle adjustment to ensure riders of all sizes and styles feel equally at home. Match that to a relatively low BB (335mm and 37.5mm drop) and you’ve got a combo that’s ready to haul into every pocket turn and launch out the other side.
