Beautiful Bicycle: SCOTT Spark RC Adventure Build

This Scott Spark RC World Cup HMX takes a race-bred cross-country (XC) platform and points it toward a much longer kind of ride. Built with bikepacking in mind, the frame’s hidden shock layout keeps the front triangle open for a full-size frame bag while preserving the clean silhouette and 120mm of rear travel that define the Spark. The SP 8 dynamo front hub gives the build its clearest departure from a typical race setup, adding self-sufficient power for lights and electronics without changing the bike’s sharp, minimal character. Finished in matte grey with black hardware, silver drivetrain details, and small red accents through the cockpit, the bike feels purposeful, technical, and quietly unusual.

FRAME AND SUSPENSION

For a bikepacking setup, the Scott Spark RC is a natural choice. The internal shock layout leaves room for a full-size frame bag without limiting any of the bike’s 120mm of rear travel. This frame is equipped with a full RockShox Flight Attendant system, which is especially useful for long days in the saddle. With constant suspension adjustment, Flight Attendant helps the bike stay efficient while maintaining traction across changing terrain.

DRIVETRAIN

To keep the drivetrain light without compromising durability, this build uses a blend of X0 and XX Transmission parts. The SRAM X0 rear derailleur and chain bring extra confidence for rough conditions, where impact resistance and consistent performance matter most. To save weight where possible, the customer opted for an XX crank and power meter paired with an XX cassette, dropping valuable grams without sacrificing the durability needed for bikepacking.

Wheels & Tires

To optimize the setup, the customer chose a completely custom wheelset built around Light Bicycle Helios AM30 rims. These rims prioritize low rolling weight, which adds up over long-haul rides. The front wheel is laced to a SON dynamo hub to power a front light and charge a bike computer, phone, and AXS batteries while riding. The rear wheel uses a DT Swiss 240 hub, chosen for dependable performance in a lightweight shell. As a useful bonus, this hub and rim pairing uses a single spoke length across both wheels, making it easier to carry only a few spares for trailside repairs.

Continental Dubnital tires were chosen for this build to keep rolling resistance low while still offering durable construction and confident handling. To further reduce puncture risk, Vittoria tire liners allow for lower tire pressure while adding another layer of flat protection.

Contact Points

As comfort is key when bikepacking, this build uses a Specialized Romin Evo Pro Mirror saddle for support when the trails get rough. RevGrip ergonomic grips create a stable and comfortable platform, helping ease strain on the hands and forearms. PNW Loam handlebars add 25mm of rise in a carbon platform, helping reduce vibration and smooth out long days on the bike.

The customer also opted for the new Wolf Tooth CTRL pedals. These clipless pedals provide a large shoe contact point without the traditional extra pedal body. The design drops weight compared to a Shimano XT pedal while increasing support underfoot, making them a smart choice for this bikepacking-focused build
