Gravel bikes have changed quite a bit since the introduction of the original OPEN U.P. bike in 2015. OPEN's first gravel bike targeted road bike geometry and body positioning, with clearance for big tires that could handle mixed terrain. The WIDE upped the ante, offering a slightly more upright position and truly massive tire clearance - for up to a 700c x 46mm, 650b x 61mm, or 27.5 x 2.4" tire - that is unlike just about any other gravel bike out there (besides the 3T Exploro Racemax).
For the less-patient of us out there, the downside of an OPEN WIDE was that they were frame only. We at Contender offer an array of custom build options (and even custom paint!) but all good things take time, of course. And now, we have an option for near-instant gratification: the OPEN WIDE Force AXS ENVE complete bike. Featuring a SRAM Force AXS 1x drivetrain, ENVE carbon wheels, and ENVE components, this complete bike is available now and ready to ride at Contender Bicycles.
Why an OPEN WIDE Force AXS ENVE Complete? Well, we've already mentioned the tire clearance, which happens in spite of the short 420mm chainstays. The WIDE rider positioning is also just a bit more upright than the UP, meaning those who wanted a UP but were looking to use fewer spacers will find their home with the WIDE. But compared to other gravel bikes, the WIDE is suitably light for a premium gravel bike, with a size medium weighing just 1,040g in a size medium. Complete bikes can weigh about 17.9 lbs or 8.1 kilograms, plenty light considering the gravel tires and beefed up gravel wheels.
The WIDE Force AXS complete bike features a full-carbon ENVE combo of handlebar, stem, and seatpost in various sizes. Handlebars specifically are the ENVE SES AR bar, with a slight flare in the drops that pair nicely to the short reach and semi-aero top of the bar.
OPEN designed this bike to fit a 700c x 46mm or 27.5 x 2.4" tire, so the WIDE Force AXS gets a choice of 700c or 650b wheels. Tires come courtesy of Schwalbe G-One Allround.
