Ride Review: Cervélo Caledonia
The all-new Cervélo Caledonia is an endurance road bike built for anyone seeking real-world riding performance over long distances through variable, sometimes rough and pothole-ridden, roads.
First Impressions
The new Caledonia features some really nice on-paper endurance bike geometry, while the frame can accommodate up to a 36mm tire or a 34mm tire with fenders. The headtube angle is 72°, and the wheelbase is 1,003mm. We were fortunate enough to ride the Caledonia for a few weeks to see how its specs would play out in the real world.
Sizing and Fit
Our tester Sean sized down from his normal size, and it worked out really well for him. He usually rides a 58cm, so he expected the 56cm to feel cramped, but he found the relaxed endurance bike geometry to be very accommodating. The Caledonia's geo lends itself to easy handling and a comfortable ride. The relaxed fit means it isn't twitchy or snappy when you don't want it to be, and it will hold a line through rough roads, no problem.
On The Road
The Cervélo Caledonia is really, really comfortable. After an hour and a half in the saddle, things are just starting to get fun. With Reserve 40/44 wheels and tires up to 36mm, this bike provides a pleasant ride quality. Potholes or rough chunky roads are a non-issue—this bike allows for seamless line choice.
Climbing Performance
Emigration Canyon is one of the classic rides in Salt Lake City, and the Caledonia performed admirably on it. Seated climbing is one of the Caledonia’s strong suits, with immediate, responsive power transfer from the saddle. Riding out of the saddle feels a touch sluggish—this bike just wants to spin.
Handling and Cornering
The Caledonia handles rougher roads with construction and potholes incredibly well, making line choice super easy. For an endurance bike with relaxed geo, the power transfer—even when sprinting—is impressive. It doesn’t feel super sluggish at all. The Caledonia’s cornering is confidence-inspiring. It will hold a line through a corner, even a high-speed arcing corner, and even on rough pavement.
Who’s it For
The Cervélo Caledonia is a great option for:
- day-to-day endurance or all-road rides
- rough roads
- big climbs
- high-speed corners
It might not be the top choice for riders who are looking to shave grams or save on watts. For massive climbs or aero endeavors, it might not be the ideal pick.
Bottom Line
The Cervélo Caledonia will be an excellent daily driver for most cyclists out there, and it’s also perfect for someone branching into the performance road bike market for the first time. This bike’s endurance geometry delivers incredible comfort on real-world terrain, including rougher pavement. It has fender mounts for those riding in wet conditions, and it accommodates up to 36mm tires without fenders. Considering the performance it delivers, the Caledonia is a great value. We recommend the Cervélo Caledonia for anyone who wants a comfortable endurance bike that takes high-speed corners with ease, loves seated climbing, and isn’t picky about road surfaces.
