Video: Ride Review Of The New Shimano XTR Di2

Written by Nick Sowards on October 29, 2025

When we first shared the new Shimano XTR Di2 drivetrain back in June, it marked a new chapter for electronic mountain bike shifting for the long-time component maker. Now, after months of testing on every type of Utah terrain, long-time Contender employee Joseph Bonacci is ready to impart his first-hand impressions and hard-won insights.

From Park City’s flow trails to Salt Lake City’s punchy climbs, Joseph has been putting the flagship Shimano groupset through its paces.

In our latest video (above), Joseph highlights what’s new with XTR Di2, and his top takeaways from months of riding, and dozens of rides.

What’s New: Key Features of New XTR Di2

Shimano’s latest XTR takes everything riders loved about the previous mechanical version and adds fully electronic shifting, cleaner cable routing, and the same legendary reliability that’s made XTR a World Cup mainstay.

Highlights:

  • Electronic Precision: Lightning-fast shifts under load, with a redesigned derailleur and integrated battery housed inside the parallelogram, delivering clean lines and added protection.

  • Durable Design: A new solid lower pulley keeps out mud and debris while reducing long-term maintenance costs.

  • Ergonomic Shifter: Simplified, thumb-only actuation feels natural and adjustable, letting riders fine-tune paddle position.

  • Upgraded Braking: The M9220/M9200 lever and caliper combo offers stronger, more consistent stopping power with Shimano’s new low-viscosity mineral oil.

  • Confidence on the Trail: One-finger braking and improved modulation offer better control on descents.

  • Wide Compatibility: Works seamlessly with Shimano 12-speed SLX, XT, and prior-generation XTR mechanical components.

Ride Review: Top Takeaways

After three months of riding on the new XTR Di2, Joseph’s takeaway is clear: it feels unmistakably Shimano—crisp, smooth, and totally dependable—and a shot across the bow to SRAM’s lead position in wireless, electronic drivetrains for off road cycling (mountain and gravel).

Highlights:

  • Shifting Under Load: Instant, confident gear changes with zero hesitation or grinding.

  • All-Conditions Performance: Reliable in dry dust, rain, and roots alike.

  • Setup & Tuning: Straightforward installation; easy to fine-tune on the fly.

  • Brake Feel: “My favorite part of the whole groupset,” Joseph says, with one-finger control, huge braking power, and minimal hand fatigue.

  • Overall Ride: Classic Shimano feel, now paired with Di2, electronic precision, and cable-free aesthetics.
