Beautiful Bicycle: Colnago Y1Rs, The Champion's Bike

Beautiful Bicycle: Colnago Y1Rs, The Champion's Bike

Written by Contender Bicycles, on August 01, 2025

This custom Colnago Y1Rs build couldn't have been completed at a more perfect moment. Just one day after the shop finished the build and had it ready for pickup, Tadej Pogačar claimed overall victory in the Tour de France. As today's most complete rider,  Tadej once again dominated early making for a predictable finish. Pogačar's smashing performance puts him front and center in any GOAT discussion for professional cycling.

Needless to say when the most well-funding Pro Tour team in cycling asks Colnago, owned by the same deep pockets as the team, for an aero bike, it is fair to expect something amazing. With new UCI restrictions easing previous restrictions on depth:width ratios for the frame's shape, the end result is going to be literally and figuratively cutting edge. Some might argue that there is something "more" about a Colnago that just hits differently. It is not just the ride feel or the name on the downtube, it is the history.

Frame: Colors of Dominance

This particular Colnago Y1Rs wears the UAE Team Emirates colorway, the same design raced at the highest level. Its red, black, and white palette shows off sharp lines and a clear sense of purpose. It is clean, classic, and pays tribute to one of the most dominant teams of this era. The Y1Rs frame sits in that rare space between full-race performance and refined craftsmanship.

On this frame, aero is everything. Built around the already race-proven geometry from Colnago's WorldTour bikes, the Y1Rs looks nothing like the V5Rs. A large-bladed fork, Y-shaped handlebar (hence the name), and an overall reduced frontal area all come together to gain every aero edge possible.

Wheels: UCI Rules Be Damned

While the frame is UCI-compliant, the wheels are not. That's entirely the point. This bike isn't racing in UCI events, so why not go for every performance gain possible?

The BikeAhead Composites BITURBO AERO wheels are a standout both visually and technically. Made in Germany, these six-spoke carbon wheels are engineered as a single piece, giving them incredible lateral stiffness and responsiveness under power. The deep aero profile is optimized for real-world speed, offering surprising stability. At just over 1,400 grams, they're impressively light for a full aero wheelset, and their unique design turns heads without compromising performance.

Thanks to their monocoque construction, the weight is more centered at the hub. Without traditional spokes or a rim relying on tensile strength, these wheels accelerate fast. Really fast. Adding to the exclusivity, these wheels aren't technically available in the U.S. market. That makes them not just fast and perfectly matched to the frame's aesthetic, but also a marker of one of the rarest builds on the road.

Drivetrain: Good Enough for Pogi, Good Enough for Us

Component-wise, this build goes all in. Shimano's top-level Dura-Ace groupset handles shifting with the kind of precision you expect at this level. Tadej Pogačar has used Dura-Ace on all his bikes for the last three seasons.

At the center is an SRM Origin crankset with carbon arms and a power meter that means business. Up front, Carbon-Ti chainrings keep things light, stiff, and just plain cool. Pogačar has been known to run Carbon-Ti rings as well, so it fits the theme. All of this is paired with a CeramicSpeed bottom bracket to keep things spinning as freely as possible.

Finishing Touches: The Devil is in the Details

Saddle choice on this build is the Selle Italia SLR 3D Boost Superflow Carbon. It's futuristic and race-tuned, with a 3D-printed structure that balances comfort and support better than most traditional saddles. The futuristic vibe of this bike comes more to life with every component.
