Beautiful Bicycle: Cannondale Topstone LAB71

Some builds stand out right away. Others take a second look. This Cannondale Topstone LAB71 falls into the second camp, with the kind of details that come into focus the longer you spend around it.

There is a lot going on in this build, but none of it feels overdone. From the layered finish of the LAB71 frameset to the deep ZIPP XPLR wheels and integrated SmartSense system, every detail feels intentionally chosen, giving the bike a look that stands out without having to shout for attention.

FRAMESET

The Cannondale Topstone LAB71 frameset is built with Cannondale’s premium carbon construction, similar to what S-Works represents for Specialized or Dogma for Pinarello. The frameset drops 160g compared to the standard Topstone frameset, a meaningful difference when counting grams. The Topstone frame is also built around the SmartSense system, an integrated radar and light setup using Garmin Varia technology. It also features Kingpin Suspension, providing 30mm of rear travel to help the bike roll smoothly over gravel trails.

DRIVETRAIN

Equipped with Shimano GRX Di2, this bike prioritizes capability and range, especially in rough conditions. A Shimano 10-51 cassette is a great choice for local gravel riding, giving this build the gearing to handle everything from steep climbs to faster descents. GRX brakes round things out with ergonomic levers and confident stopping power.

WHEELS AND TIRES

Leaning into the performance-meets-capability side of gravel, this bike uses the ZIPP 303 XPLR SW wheelset. With a 32mm internal width, these wheels provide a stable platform that helps keep the tires planted and traction high through corners. Set up for hardpack and fast rolling conditions, the Pirelli Cinturato Gravel H tires were a natural fit for efficiency and grip.

CONTACT POINTS

Rider contact points play a huge role in how any bike feels, so this build was finished with comfort and compliance in mind. An ENVE carbon stem is matched with an ENVE gravel handlebar, while the Specialized Power Mirror saddle uses a 3D-printed upper to deliver comfort even on rougher days. Rounding things out is Cannondale’s SmartSense light system, adding another layer of thoughtful integration to the build.
