Beautiful Bicycle: Mondraker Arid Flat Bar Conversion

Beautiful Bicycle: Mondraker Arid Flat Bar Conversion

Written by John Merrill, on May 01, 2026

This custom Mondraker Arid starts with a carbon gravel frameset, then takes a more focused path with a flat bar, wide gearing, generous tire volume, and a clear off-road bias. The Fangsia finish gives the bike its visual spark, while the build itself leans into control, capability, and adventure beyond the usual gravel route. It feels like a modern answer to the 90s mountain bike idea, refined through carbon, wireless shifting, and clean component choices.

Frame Detail

The Arid Carbon frameset already brings modern geometry and clearance for up to 50mm tires. In stock form, that versatility is part of a broader all-around package. Here, that same foundation is used with intent. Bigger volume tires and a more purpose-driven setup unlock the frame's off-road potential, giving it the traction, compliance, and stability needed not just for rough roads, but for flowing trails, loose corners, and more technical terrain.

Drivetrain

Stock builds rely on gravel-specific drivetrains that prioritize simplicity but limit range. This build upgrades to SRAM GX Eagle Transmission AXS, bringing a 10 to 52T cassette and true mountain bike gearing into the mix. The result is a wider range, better climbing ability, and more control on steep, uneven trail sections where cadence and gear choice matter. SRAM LEVEL SLV hydraulic brakes add consistent, confident stopping power to match.

Wheels & Tires

Reynolds AR25 carbon wheels keep the ride light and responsive, while Schwalbe G-One R tires in 700x45 maximize grip, comfort, and control. This setup adds the confidence needed to leave the gravel behind and roll straight onto dirt trails, handling loose surfaces, small obstacles, and changing conditions without feeling out of place.

Cockpit & Contact Points

The biggest shift comes at the cockpit. Moving from drop bars to an ENVE M6 flat bar changes how the bike handles in a meaningful way. There is more leverage, more precise steering, and a more upright, confident position when navigating tighter turns or uneven trail features. Paired with carefully chosen contact points, the bike feels stable, intuitive, and capable well beyond typical gravel routes.
