Specialized S-Works Tarmac SL9 - Shimano Dura-Ace Di2
Product Details
The Specialized S-Works Tarmac SL9 redefines what it means to build the fastest road bike. Rather than chasing isolated metrics like lowest drag or lightest weight, Specialized engineered this machine around a single outcome: Time to Finish, the actual elapsed time to complete a real-world race course. Through what the brand calls the Equation of Speed, every design decision factors in aerodynamics, weight, mechanical efficiency, rolling resistance, and rider dynamics working together, not separately.
The FACT 12r carbon frame weighs just 687 grams while standing alone at the top of the aero race bike category. This unprecedented combination is achieved through Flow State Design, where tube shapes are engineered to carry structural load efficiently without excess material. Every surface has been reshaped for aerodynamic precision. The Speed Sniffer head tube, narrowed by an innovative offset steerer design, reduces frontal area by 10 percent while saving 4 watts of drag compared to the SL8. The dropped down tube keeps disturbed air from spilling into the frame, while the Flow Fork twists outward to guide airflow more efficiently. The Win Fin rear end, inspired by real-race observation that breakaway riders carry one bottle, not two, saves an additional 0.5 watts through dedicated single-bottle aerodynamics.
Every innovation was validated through Specialized's sixth-generation Moving Leg Mannequin, a rider-inclusive wind tunnel test that accounts for the real aerodynamic effects of pedaling motion, not static assumptions. This testing was calibrated to race-specific postures observed during high-speed breakaways, where aero efficiency decides races.
Shimano's Dura-Ace Di2 electronic drivetrain delivers instantaneous, precise shifting in all conditions, while Roval Rapide CLX III wheels provide the perfect aerodynamic and weight complement. Specialized's simulations show the SL9 finishing 14 seconds faster than the previous generation on Grand Tour stages—the difference between losing and winning at the highest levels of professional cycling.
