Beautiful Bicycle: Specialized S-Works Crux 4

With the new Specialized Crux 5 getting most of the attention, it is easy to overlook how good the previous-generation Crux 4 still is. This one keeps the parts mix simple, with Rival AXS XPLR, Zipp 303 XPLR S wheels, and a black finishing kit around the purple frame. Nothing is overdone, and that works in its favor. It still feels current, even alongside the new bike.

THE FRAME

The Specialized S-Works Crux 4 frame has a leaner, more traditional profile than a lot of current gravel bikes. Round tubing, slim stays, and a clean open center give it a simple silhouette, even with 45mm tires. The purple finish adds some texture up close, while the tonal Specialized graphics stay fairly quiet. The result is a frame that feels clean and familiar without looking dated.

Drivetrain

SRAM Rival AXS E1 XPLR handles the drivetrain, with a 42t chainring and 10-46t cassette. Going with Rival keeps the build a little more restrained on cost while still getting the core AXS experience. The 1x setup is simple, clean, and gives the bike plenty of range without adding much visual clutter.

WHEELS & TIRES

The Zipp 303 XPLR S wheels are wrapped in 700 x 45 Maxxis Ramblers. By current gravel standards, 45mm sits on the slimmer side, but that can be a good thing on a bike that is not living exclusively off-road. There is still enough volume for loose and rough surfaces, without giving up as much of that quick road feel. It keeps the setup broad rather than overly specialized.

TOUCHPOINTS

The cockpit is built around a Zipp Service Course SL-70 Ergo bar and 100mm Service Course SL stem, wrapped in ENVE tape. At the back, an ENVE G Series dropper supports a Specialized Power Comp Mimic saddle. The black finishing kit keeps this end of the build simple and consistent, with the small Wolf Tooth dropper lever tucked neatly under the left hood.

The latest Crux may have moved the platform forward, but this Crux 4 does not look like a bike that has suddenly become old. The proportions are still clean, the tire clearance leaves plenty of room for a modern gravel setup, and the right component choices bring it right up to date. This one is a good example of how much life is still left in the previous generation.
